Edwards backed stock market gamble on Social Security. This is going to be pretty shitty for Edwards in New Hampshire and in the South.

28. Dean's supporters are ruining him.
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 09:47 AM by Lex
I had no problem with Dean and even sent him money. I didn't think his enthusiastic speech was all that bad Monday night.

But last night and this morning all I've seen on DU is lies and misinformation spread about the other candidates by Dean supporters.

Forget it. Dean's supporters have ruined any good feelings I had about Dean to begin with. I cannot in good conscience cast a vote for Dean because of the way some of his supporters have acted here at DU.

Why spread such unsubstantiated and outright horse manure about other candidates?

30. I have to concur.
Dean's supporters are his own worst enemy. I like Dean and have never thought he was unelectable, but the bashing done by his supporters of other candidates has been depressing.

14. The only thing he did wrong . . .
was to do well in Iowa, thus making him a target for reich-wing attacks.

They only attack those whom they're afraid of, that's why they spent so much time slandering Dean and Clark the past few months. Now they'll attack Kerry and Edwards until Tuesday, then they'll focus on whoever is ahead after that.

Drudge and his ilk aren't interested in any truth, they just want to tear down whoever looks like the largest threat to their chimp.

13. John Edwards on Social Security. He OPPOSES privatization
Keep stock market out of Social Security. (Sep 2003)
Federal match for every dollar put into savings. (Sep 2003)
Voted NO on using the Social Security Surplus to fund tax reductions. (Jul 1999)
Voted NO on Social Security Lockbox & limiting national debt. (Apr 1999)

Keep stock market out of Social Security
Q: Can the stock market be a component of the Social Security retirement system?
EDWARDS: No, I don't believe it can. I think we have to do a number of things. One is, in order to lengthen the financial viability of Social Security, the single most important thing is to get away from this deficit spending that this president has put us in and move back to fiscal responsibility.

Federal match for every dollar put into savings
We have a train wreck coming. We have the onslaught of the baby boomers coming. We have government that's in deficit, getting deeper into deficit. What we ought to do is help people save. We have one of the worst private savings rates in the world. I would match dollar for dollar the savings of middle-income families to allow them to save privately to help us address this problem.
Source: Debate at Pace University in Lower Manhattan Sep 25, 2003

Voted NO on using the Social Security Surplus to fund tax reductions.
Vote on a motion to table (or kill) the motion to recommit the bill to the Senate Finance and Claims Committee with instructions directing the committee to "correct the fact that the bill uses" Social Security surpluses for tax breaks.
Bill S.1429 ; vote number 1999-236 on Jul 30, 1999

Voted NO on Social Security Lockbox & limiting national debt.
This vote limited debate on the amendment offered by Sen. Abraham (R-MI) that would have created a Social Security "lockbox" and establish limits on the public debt. . This vote failed because 3/5 of the Senate did not vote.

But, Jesus, can't we be civil amongst ourselves? I mean, at least most of us here are Democrats, right? We all want Bush gone, right? Jesus...
