Luntz GOP Playbook Now Readable online - No Downloads - Searchable Text
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 10:38 AM by freeandbrave
The Frank Luntz Republican Playbook is now readable online!! This is great news for those millions of us who can’t (or don’t want to) download the massive PDF image file. It is also an invaluable asset to bloggers, site proprietors, writers, and other researchers who wish to search the text (something you cant do with the PDF file because it is an image file…not a text file).

They are putting out a section per day (The Playbook is 10 sections) and are currently up to section VI. If you haven’t read this stuff yet, it is your responsibility to do so. Every knowledgeable and responsible progressive should read and understand this material.

And besides, it is IMMENSELY ENTERTAINING!!

Read it now!

5. Because if you know the enemies plan, you can counter it.
I spent years in the business of retailing. You can't believe the lengths to which companies go to protect their strategy, advertising plans, etc.

It's always much better to know what basis your opposition is working from.

You may find Luntz's ideas absurd, humerous, idiotic, or any other name you choose, you must admit, it's worked with a lot of Americans.

8. We have everything to learn from Luntz!!!
This information is invaluable...and I don't think i've ever heard anyone honestly insist that Luntz is an idiot. To the contrary, he is a genius.

TAKE A LOOK AROUND YOU!

Who controls every facet of power in the nation? Progressives?

The Luntz playbook gives us invaluable insight into the perceptions of the Republicans and the strategies that they intend to use.

We ignore it at our own peril!

... Newt Gingrich's Keyword Manifesto: Every Word Matters: Using 'Keywords' as a Political Tactic

Excerpt:

In 1990, Newt Gingrich published a booklet he called "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control". He mailed his little manifesto to Republican leaders throughout the land and encouraged them to "paint a vivid, brilliant word picture." Gingrich, showing a distrust for his fellow Republicans' judgement, saw fit to supply the leaders with two lists of keywords, a positive word list to use in describing themselves and a negative keyword list to describe those evil Democrats.

Gingrich's positive words for Republicans (try not to laugh or retch)

31. Speaking ofr "try not to laugh or retch" - did you see this Luntz item:

9) Americans are looking for ACCOUNTABILITY from their government before they even consider government programs or ideology. Skepticism of government is still running high - with the biggest suspicion that government will not do what it says and take responsibility for its actions. Americans want their government to be accountable (33%) before they want it to provide lower taxes (14%) or better services (8%). So when you talk about government, talk about the need for accountability before tackling any issue.

Yeah. Accountability. Check, Frank. Wonder if he even knows what accountability is - as he whores for the LEAST accountable, least responsible government in American history?

But this is all good. KNOW YOUR ENEMY. KNOW YOUR ENEMY'S PLAYBOOK. Far easier to adapt it to your own needs then. Especially this newt gangrene manifesto. It sure poisoned the well against us. Since we have his weapons, LET'S USE 'EM!!! On him - and ALL his buddies?

Taste of your own medicine, newty...

14. Welcome to DU, I wondered the same thing for awhile till I figured it out
When someone posts a new response on a thread, the thread goes to the top of the page for its forum. Since some forums have a lot of traffic and many people have little time, they won't see threads that aren't near the top. So, when someone thinks a thread is important but they don't have anything new to add to the discussion, they just give it a "kick."

However, I do like your theory too, and the icon seems to suggest that.

...but Barbara is an old war horse that has switched parties more often that Jeff Gannon switched names.

The Nat'l Democrats are courting Bob Casey. He won most every precinct, even in Republican strongholds in this past election, where he ran for State Treasurer. Gov. Rendell says, if anyone can beat Tricky Ricky Santorum, it's Casey.

Casey has promised to announce his intentions by the end of this week.

11. A gem
I like this one under: PART III "GROWTH, PROSPERITY, & RESTORE ENERGY and ECONOMIC SECURITY"

9) The root cause of outsourcing is the inhospitable business climate in the US. And the best way to address this problem is found in reducing taxation, regulation, and litigation, which allows innovation and education to bring more jobs into America.

-end-

That's like saying the root cause of robbery is stores charging money. This really lays out their view of the rights they assume Corporations should be entitled to, which in short is anything they want and nothing they don't.

15. Thanks for posting the links - I did want to read this
First of all, Luntz' analysis in the introduction is thorough and valid. He's not bashing Demos -- he's analyzing election strategies that go back 25 years and he's deadon.

His analysis of voter perceptions about the differences between Bush and Kerry is valid. Regardless of political attacks, Kerry was not strong on a consistent message of why HE would make a better president and what he would do differently.

The components of the Bush victory and Kerry defeat all boil down to a single candidate attribute that the President had in abundance but was AWOL from the Kerry campaign: "says what he means and means what he says." In every state and national survey we conducted in 2004, no desired presidential attribute ever scored higher, and nowhere was Bush stronger and Kerry weaker. In every focus group I moderated, voters would plead for candidates who spoke from the heart and not from some speechwriter's notes.

And nowhere does the image of straight talk matter more than in areas of security: national security, economic security and personal security. John Kerry had had two full years to articulate a concise position on terrorism, the economy, and issues involving values. He couldn't do it. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney did it every single day.

Even during the three Presidential debates, the Massachusetts Senator gave answers that left uncommitted voters in my focus groups both confused and mystified. His critique of the current Administration's failures clearly did political damage, but the electorate could not define exactly what he would do differently. What Kerry did not realize was that referencing "a plan" roughly two dozen times over 90-minutes is different than actua11y having one. In a post-9/11 world, voters simply could not elect a President whose position on the nation's most salient issues were unknown even to himself.

I think putting Dean in charge of the DNC is a step in the right direction and while the following applies mostly for HR elections, it's valid overall.

Strategy: Acknowledge the complexity of your district and the challenges you face should the political climate turn sour. Too often Members in close elections acknowledge their electoral weakness after the election but don't address it until it is too late. If you received less than 57% of the vote, your campaign should begin today: a 20-month effort that includes fundraising, voter contact, message development and grassroots operations. And all of it should be measured on a monthly basis.

Luntz is not a nutjob -- he lays out good analysis and strategy that any political candidacy can benefit from, either by following some of it or by creating an effective strategy against specific strategies suggested.

If we want to win the presidency in 2008 AND have an effective administration, we need to take back the House in 2006 and narrow the gap in the Senate.

http://usconservatives.about.com/library/bl2006senraces.htm">Here's a list of Senators up for re-election in 2006. It's time to stop fretting about who may or may not be a Presidential candidate and to get behind Congressional races in 2006.

I think it's also time to take a more mature approach on any litmus tests about those holding Democratic or Republican seats -- it is the very rare candidate whom any of us could wholeheartedly support as being a mirror image of all of our political beliefs. Politics is the art of compromise and most candidates will move themselves towards the center or moderate viewpoint in order to garner broad support.

20. Credibility--Luntz is right about this
"So how does a President with a national job approval rating hovering at 50%, an economy that lost more than a million jobs over his four years in office, a war that has cost more than a thousand American lives and counting, $50 a barrel for oil, and a national mood that is downright sour still secure more than enough votes to win re-election? And what does it portend for the Republican Party in 2006?

"The answer? Credibility. George W. Bush had it. John Kerry did not."

*****
And WHY does Bush have credibility? Because the Democrats do not scream, whine, moan, cajole, and bitch about Bush's constant lying.

Every time a Democrat gets air-time, that person should be listing Bush's egregious and blatant lies. But no . . .

The man is the biggest liar we've ever had in office and Kerry's people were telling him not to be "too negative."

George Lakoff was telling them to hammer away at Bush's credibility, but Kerry and his people took the high road.

The result was another loss for the good guys.

22. WOW, these people are SICK!!
Check out the, Framing: Primer for a Progressive Revolution. Part II, The Nurturant (sic) Parent vs. the Strict Father....... :wow:

After explaining how progressives view the world as basically good and how they "nurture" their children......read THEIR mission statement! These people are SICK!

>> Strict Father: In the conservative worldview, it's assumed that the world is, and always will be, a dangerous and difficult place. It is a competitive world and there will always be winners and losers. Children are naturally bad since they want to do what feels good, not what is moral, so they have to be made good by being taught discipline. There is tangible evil in the world and to stand up to evil, one must be morally strong, or “disciplined."
In the 'Strict Father' family, the father's job is to protect and support the family. Children are to respect and obey him. The father's moral duty is to teach his children right from wrong, with punishment that is typically physical and can be painful when they do wrong. It is assumed that parental discipline in childhood is required to develop the internal discipline that adults will need in order to be moral and to succeed. Morality and success are linked through discipline. This focus on discipline is seen as a form of love -- "tough love."

The mother is in the background, not strong enough to protect and support the family or fully discipline the children on her own. Her job is to uphold the authority of the father and to care for and comfort the children. As a "mommy," she tends to be overly soft-hearted and might well coddle or spoil the child. The father must make sure this does not happen, lest the children become weak and dependent.

There isn't anything I can say except, these people are SICK!

bathroom wall, bulletin board and telephone pole in the country. It shows EXACTLY how they view the American people----children who need to be punished and taught lessons. So I guess economically breaking the whole goddamn middle class is their 'daddy discipline' way of teaching lessons (not to mention robbing from the people). Why don't they go a step further and suggest that some child beating and molestation is also good for the 'children'!! Too bad Joe Sixpack doesn't read this and see what a little not potty trained child he is to these Country Club Parents who need to discipline him.

And when we were both working (and he wasn't home, minding the kids and the store) it was frequently THIS "mommy" who brought home more of the bacon than he did. BTW, THIS "mommy" found herself a guy who's PLENTY man enough not to be the least bit threatened or hobbled by such a woman at his side. That's why we've been together for 29 years.

44. It's more than just framing
Frank Luntz shows the importance of having a message and strategy behind that message. That was sorely lacking in the Kerry campaign. The Democrats need to learn how to use strategy as well as the Republicans do in advancing their message because we have the advantage. Luntz is all about how to obscure the real meaning behind the Republicans' true motives whereas Democrats have nothing to hide. They just need to get a message that has "focus and direction" (http://sfam.blogspot.com/2005/03/framing-is-not-answer.html).
