Dean joins with AFL-CIO to fight privatization of Social Security.
This is a very important thing that Howard Dean did yesterday on his way to MS.

AFL-CIO leaders, Howard Dean plan political strategy in Las Vegas
By CHRISTINA ALMEIDA
ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAS VEGAS (AP) - "Democratic Party Chair Howard Dean met Tuesday with top union leaders to discuss labor's political strategy, including a campaign to oppose President Bush's plan for Social Security reform.

"The fate of the Democratic Party and the fate of labor are intertwined," Dean said after his closed-door meeting with the AFL-CIO's Executive Council. "It's in both of our interests to work together, and that's what we're going to do."

The AFL-CIO plans a massive campaign against privatization of Social Security, hoping to defeat the proposal and boost the union's political strength in future elections.

President Bush plan has proposed allowing workers under age 55 to divert 4 percent of their pay into personal accounts. Workers could then choose among a handful of investment choices, including government bonds, stock index and other mutual funds.

"We know that we have to organize a response that is bigger and better to turn the unity and the participation of our 2004 political operation into a permanent culture of mobilization in local unions," AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said."

1. well I guess we know now why Dean didn't appear on that
program yesterday with Mellman. He was actually working behind the scenes with the AFL-CIO to work out a strategy to defeat Bush's SS scheme.

2. You mean he was working on fixing the problem instead of talking with
Ken Mehlman and NPR about it? Disgraceful!

3. Exactly.
But that won't be enough. Some expect him to put on his cape and save Social Security single-handedly.

12. I am a Union member and glad to hear, Unions and Dean is
working to together to protect the little guys.

I have a question... Did Terry (old DNC chair) ever go around the country and got people involved? I don't remember him doing this sort of things.

6. I hope that most of the party is on board with this.
When I remember that the unions were marginalized for years by a certain group of ideologues in the party....then I really hope we are past it.

7. If Dems can't stand up for working people, they might as well join GOP.

In 2003, the median family income in the United States was about $40,000. This L-curve graphic boggles the mind regarding the disparity of wealth in our country.

10. Here is the AFL-CIO website for activism..."Working Families"
http://www.workingamerica.org/

Non-union and retirees can join. I have been getting their mailings for a long time now, and they are excellent.

11. It's good to see our chairman
trying to restore ties with labor as well as southerners. I've felt that the party would be stronger if we hadn't spent the last 25 years running from the labor movement.

13. You mean Dean is busy plotting with the plebeians and not corporate
royalty, like the Repukes and DLC do? Isn't that Communism? </sarcasm>
