How the press in Mississippi covered Dean's visit
Here's the front page of today's Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, where Dean spoke. What is missing from this page?

Here's the front page of The Sun in Biloxi. Notice the difference?

1. What's the Difference between Jackson and Biloxi?
Just wondering. I remember Biloxi being on the Gulf the only time I drove through.

5. Jackson is the state capital
Biloxi is on the coast. The Clarion-Ledger is the largest paper in the state and is owned by Gannett.

4. I lived in MIss from about 1961 to about 1963 ..If I remember correctly,
the office of the Clarion Ledger weren't too far away from the Governor's Mansion (Ross Barnett at the time)...Haley Barbour is Governor now (WHAT A DOWNTURN!!!!!!!!) and wasn't he somehow someone who was connected to the press before he became Governor? Maybe he has as much power with the press over in Jackson as Shrub has with the press in the WH...but then ... the entire MSM is in Shrub's corner, aren't they?

6. The Clarion-Ledger
is about three blocks from the governor's mansion.

I used to work at the paper in the 80s. I doubt Barbour had anything to do with not putting Dean on the front page.

7. Good to see it on the front page in Biloxi, but technically...
it's Dr. Dean, not "Mr."

Oh, and I've said it before and I'll say it again: Gannett is, by and large, a GOP-backing, Bush's-ass-kissing corporation all the way. (I used to work for one of their papers.) I'd be willing to bet that's why Dean isn't mentioned on the Clarion-Ledger's front page--can't have anything published that might offend the Chimpleton. :grr:

14. In the Clarion Ledger's defense...
It's front page does not include a shameless, freeper baiting editorial headline about the supreme court's last decision.

15. Saving the children
The pic of Dean is great but I am also struck by the article about the man who killed at 16 being reprieved from his death sentence.

Progress for Progressives on two fronts on one front page.

17. No, Biloxi is NOT a liberal haven
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 02:05 AM by Selatius
I'm in college now in Starkville, but when I lived on the coast, I could tell it was not terribly liberal to begin with. All three coastal counties went for Bush. The only places in Mississippi that consistently vote for Democrats are in the poorest areas along the Mississippi River.

I don't recommend this state as a place to live, especially if you are a liberal. It is a socially repressive, very conservative state, and there are few job opportunities, but gee, it's one of those right to work states, and we love having the rebel flag in the state flag!

19. Yeah, Starkville is pretty dull, but at least the people there voted
for a new state flag. Obviously, there is some progressive thought there since so few counties in Mississippi did.
