Christian Right Wants To Transform American Culture
BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents

March 2, 2005
Energised by last year's election victory which mobilised their vote, Christian conservatives have been confidently pushing a moral agenda which puts education at the heart of a battle to change US culture.

Patrick Henry students are committed to transforming America

Sitting in a noisy but strangely tidy student canteen, Naomi Laine outlined her political vision.

"My intention is to impact the culture ," she said.

"The people are the most important component of a society, and so that's where the battle for the minds needs to be waged."

Naomi sounds like a well-seasoned politician. But she is in fact a first year student at Patrick Henry College, America's first university established primarily for evangelical Christian home-schooled children.

Patrick Henry College is located in the small commuter town of Purcellville, Virginia.

It is only a short drive from Washington DC but just far enough away not to be influenced by the big city culture of the capital.

Founded in 2000 and with ambitious plans for expansion, the college sits on a 106-acre plot of land, dominated by the colonial grandeur of Founders Hall, the main building on the campus.

1. Here is exactly what they want:
THEOCRACY!!!!!

They want a nation where it's illegal to be any other religion besides Christianity. Period.

10. Just like always?
I once heard that the Puritans left England not to escape persecution, but because they were not allowed to PRACTICE persecution.

Certainly, once they got here, they practiced it on themselves (witch-hunts).

Does anyone know more about the Puritans' history back in the Mommyland?

13. Back in england, they were considered to be a bizarre cult.
And the ones who came here were the worst: the ultra-conservative lunatic fringe of the "Puritan" movement.
They were kicked out for good reason.

15. Weren't they associated with Cromwell?
After the monarchy was re-established, I'd imagine any group that supported Cromwell was not welcome in England anymore.

4. The last bit of that article,
the part with the progressive evangelical guy, was somewhat heartening. Otherwise, a chilling look inside a genuine zombie factory.

5. Well goody for them with their internships and "access"
Hey, why don't those good little Christian Soldiers for Neo-Conservatism go down to the recruiting office and sign up to join the Godly crusade in Iraq.

Oh and gee, I wonder how much faith based tax funding this bastion of free market individualism gets?

6. this is one of benefits given to them
for their cooperation with the corporate oligarchy.
the corporate elite think this stuff will{and they may be right} give them a more complacent workforce.
a workforce that eyes the moral ball of crap that doesn't and won't ever impact them.

calvinism in it's post-modern format.

8. I particularly think this is important
"If other people feel threatened by it, they've got to get out there and mobilize their folks to be well-trained, serving internships, getting to Washington and so forth."

Thats exactly what we need to do. Get our own people out there to counter these wackos.

assume he believed in the separation of church and state. Bad news for the fundy fanatics.

16. I wish them luck (not)...there gunna need it!
remember how many americans did not vote in this last election...i really believe that most americans could give a shit about religion, and a large chunk dont care about gov and politics either. Yeah, they may show up on christmas, easter, and hannukah...but after that they just dont care. If these fundies and righties get what they ask for thru the back door of bush, they are in for an awakening when the largly secular folks dont want anything to do with it.
