Sister Called From The Protest Of Bush's Jersey Talk. Arrests Under Way!
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 12:51 PM by DistressedAmerican
She went down to protest. They have begun arresting folks in the large (500-1000 person) protest crowd.

She says that they are arresting "little kids", high schoolers I think. She is getting shots and video. I will get it posted as soon as she gets it to me.

I hate these jackbooted thugs! Welcome to the American Police State!

ON EDIT: SEE POST #32 FOR MORE TO THE STORY!

70. My "piss off"
message was directed at Rudolf the Red. Posted in the wrong spot! Damn. Anyway alert on me if you want.

I believe the Bush to Hitler comparison becomes more appropriate every day.

I am tired. Tired of living in a country where the leaders make me ahamed to call myself American.

I am tired of seeing my civil rights subverted.

I am tired of seeing the government twist the media to put out bullshit messages.

I am tired of seeing the government favor businesses over citizens.

I am tired of seeing the environment destroyed.

I am tired of living in a country where the most important thing is growing the damned economy.

I am tired of living in a nation where religous zealots persecute those not in agreement with them.

I am tired of racism.

I am tired of sexism.

I am just plain FUCKING TIRED of trying to explain myself.

Olaf

110. You'll be interested to know that at least some of our elders see this,
too.

I know I've posted this elsewhere before, but I think it bears repeating. I attended a "DNC Listening Event" in January in downtown L.A. wherein the public was invited to submit comments about the future direction of the Democratic Party (in particular, as they were considering who would be the next chairman). Not only was there outrageously overwhelming support for Howard Dean among the several hundred in attendance, but there was a huge and repeated and VERY forceful outcry against the DLC-instigated "republi-CON LITE" and spineless leanings of the party.

ANYWAY - the point is, one older man got up to speak. He identified himself as being a World War Two veteran. He said he was old enough to remember the rise of fascism, and was able to recognize it. Then he said he could see it happening again, HERE in THIS country, NOW. That was a memorable moment. A lot of us stopped short and sucked air.

I don't think people who say that are shrieking conspiracy buffs or hysterical nutcases. I think they're seeing handwriting on the wall, and they've actually spent a few moments reading it.

156. Oh, no no I didn't alert on you - I must have posted in the wrong place
and I am tired of all the same things you are, and probably more. I grow more and more frustrated each day, as well. The thing I'm most tired of is seeing innocent people dying everyday for profit. The 2nd thing would probably be the media enabling it. Bush=Hitler is fine by me.

I don't think you have you explain yourself here. We're ALL tired of Bushit's bullshit, and what our country is becoming, on here.

I alerted on rudolf the red because he was obviously lost.

Welcome to DU!

It helps to know there are other folks thinking in the same vein as I am. It gets frustrating as hell when so many people don't see the direction this nation is headed, or even worse, those that LIKE the way this nation is headed.

 Americans are cowards or hopelessly ignorant one or the other maybe both. With all that these fascists have accomplished and threatened to accomplish one would think people would be a little more upset and out in the streets. But noooooo. Here we all sit typing away thinking blissfully that it just can't be true. Democrats will get some backbone and make this bad nightmare go away..ain't gunna happen. Rush Limbaugh on Armed Forces Radio should show you that. That is step one to fascism and Democrats just poo poo it. We have one last hope and that is Howard Dean. 21. No one is advocating murder.
You've been on too many Freeper sites.
Here, when someone says "eliminated," he or she means "not elected or re-elected." The Freepers, as evidenced by the rightwing sites that applauded the murder of a judge's family, DO mean "killed" when they say eliminated.

And, if you wonder why so many compare Bush to Hilter, why don't you try Googling "Hitler religion quotes" and see how much the Blivet sounds like the Fuher. Personally, I think Bush is more like Mussolini in terms of the scope of his fascist tendancies, but, that's neither here nor there. Bush *is* fascist.

Are you trying to distract from the suppression of political dissent?

Are you trying to obfuscate what the neoCONs are doing?

If the reason "we" lost has something to do with calling Bush a fascist, how come the Republicans won when they've been calling anyone who is unlike them a commie or fascist or traitor or terrorist appeaser?

Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 12:53 PM by DistressedAmerican
Called to report this arrest she witnessed:

Police arrested 18 year old protester Emily Calvin, slammed her against police car after she tripped on barricade trying to get back from police. She has some video of the arrest and stills of her banner on the ground. Banner text decried corporate oil. Several others also detained.

My sister and a friend were followed for several blocks by the cops who repeatedly threatened with arrest if they did not keep walking.

Several fairly large groups of protesters cleared from the area as the "guests" left the "town hall style" talk.

The Social Security driven talk was billed in advance as an "orderly" event.

My sister estimates between 500 and 1000 protesters in total participated today!

She is rushing home to send me shots and video. Stay posted.

"Today's events in Westfield, N.J., and at Notre Dame University are both billed as town meetings.

However, both (Indiana and NJ) are by-invitation-only, with pre-selected participants and audience tickets distributed through groups that generally support Bush."

"Bush Greeted by Protestors in Garden State

Mar 4, 2005 11:00 am US/Eastern (1010 WINS) (Westfield, NJ)

Scores of protesters demonstrated Friday morning near a town hall-style meeting where President Bush was to outline his proposal to create personal accounts within Social Security. One woman was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, police said. Witnesses said she tried to walk into the street against police wishes....

Several hundred people gathered outside the Westfield Armory where the president started speaking about 11 a.m. People in the crowd, mainly made up of protesters, were bundled in hats and scarfs as they awaited the president's arrival.... Michelle Rowland, 64 of Scotch Plains, said she came to make her voice heard. She hoped the president would see her sign, which read, "If you want to gamble, Mr. President, go to Atlantic City."...

According to the most recent figures available from the Social Security Administration, 1.3 million New Jersey residents received Social Security benefits in December 2002. That included nearly 936,000 retired workers and 131,000 widows and widowers. Social Security beneficiaries represented 15.8 percent of the state's total population. New Jersey Citizen Action is working with Americans United to Protect Social Security, a coalition of more than 200 organizations formed, at the urging of Democratic congressional leaders, to defeat Bush's proposal."

State GOP on the fence as Bush visits
Congressmen say they await details of his Social Security plan
Friday, March 04, 2005
BY ROBERT COHEN
STAR-LEDGER WASHINGTON BUREAU
WASHINGTON -- As President Bush brings his campaign for overhauling Social Security to Westfield today, New Jersey's Republican congressmen are holding off on endorsing the administration's plan, waiting to see more details.

In the face of unified Democratic opposition and opinion polls indicating that public support for the proposal is dropping, the state's GOP representatives are generally taking a wait-and-see attitude on Bush's call to divert some Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts.

At the same time, they praise Bush for tackling a tough but important issue.

"The president is making his case, but I haven't endorsed his proposal," said Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11th Dist.), among a group of state lawmakers who were flying with Bush to New Jersey this morning aboard Air Force One. "I think all options are out on the table. The president has issued a challenge. Our ears and eyes will be open to what our constituents are saying."

Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5th Dist.) said he wants to see a specific plan before making a decision but is willing to consider personal investment accounts as part of an overall reform.

"I have not made a commitment for or against a plan," said Garrett. "I'm keeping an open mind, but I embrace the idea that we need to address the problem."

Bush's New Jersey appearance today is part of a stepped-up White House campaign over the next two months to try to boost public and congressional support for restructuring Social Security. After speaking with an invited audience at the Westfield Armory this morning, the president was scheduled to head to a similar event in Indiana.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said, "We're going to be blanketing the country with administration officials, White House officials and the president himself, talking to the American people in the coming weeks and identifying the problems facing Social Security."

GOP Rep. Mike Ferguson, whose 7th Congressional District includes Westfield, said Bush's appearance is part of an important educational process. But while praising Bush, Ferguson said it is premature to sign on the bottom line.

"There is not really a proposal, just a lot of ideas," said Ferguson. "We are in a debate stage. We need a reasonable, rational discussion about a very serious problem."
-end snip-

I sent along this graphic for my sister to use against the aforementioned Bush toadie, Ferguson if possible:

Reading through the Star-Ledger story you posted, I noticed this:

"Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th Dist.), who is organizing one of the protests, said he wishes Bush would have opened the town hall forum "to any New Jerseyan interested in the future of Social Security, rather than only friendly Republican supporters."

Even our Democratic members of Congress are protesting in the streets.

"See, personal accounts is an add-on to that which the government is going to pay you. It doesn't replace the Social Security system," he said. "It is a part of getting a better rate of return."

Calling his plan an "add-on" was an interesting choice of words. That is the term Democrats use to describe their alternative plan, an account that workers would be free to set up outside the Social Security system without diverting any portion of payroll taxes.

It's not Social Security "reform", it's Seocial security "dis-mantling" call a spade a spade.

It's always good to hear people are exercising their right to free speech, no matter how limited by "security" precautions (the "security" they are worried about - it's kind of like "he doth protest too much") I mean, if he needs that much security - maybe he really is that evil)... just a two penny thought.

99. Sister Just Called. Couldn't Find Car After Being Herded By
the police through several residential neighborhoods.

While she was looking she ran into the kids (one of which was her brother) that were with the girls that was arrested. They recovered her banner from the street. I will post shots shortly.

They have not seen her since she was arrested. She has not contacted her family. My sister is doing so. She got the number from her friends. She will turn over the footage to her family as well for any possible legal follow up.

She spoke with a reporter from WNYC that had also seen the incident and was going down to the police station to try to pressure them to release her.

As my sister described it the police were jamming their clubs into the chests of the kids who were trying to assist the girl after she tripped and fell over the barricade. During which time they grabbed and arrested the her.

I will post the pics and video SOON.

arrested with the girl and another being tackeled by 4 cops and held down by his neck during arrest. Kid with the mohawk was dragged over the barricade by the police and arrested, apparently singeled out from the crowd.

All protesters were herded into seperated pens. They were approximately a block and a half away fenced in like sheep.

When the crowd was broken up they were herded by the police for at least 6 blocks, shouting insults and pushing the group the whole way.

130. the police worked very hard to disperse the crowds...
some people were told to assemble in a park about 1.5 miles away from the armory. others assembled near the parking lot where pallone spoke, and walked a block or so to the armory. a block from the armory, we ran into the police and about 15 pro-bush supporters, including 4 or 5 seven year olds chanting "four more years." as more protesters arrived, the bushies disappeared, except for the older gent in the nice overcoat who told us to "get a job." they must hire one for every protest.

we were getting a good head of steam, chanting loudly and getting organized, when the police herded us around the corner to a street a little closer to the armory (but still too far to be heard.) they could've lifted their barricades and allowed us to walk 50 feet, instead of around the corner, but they were obviously trying to interfere with the dynamic.

as we were rounding the corner, there was a commotion and we heard that someone was arrested. a girl stepped out of line and they decided to make an example of her, i guess. a lot of folks left at that point (scared to be arrested, i think.) we became kind of disorganized. the end of the street was blocked with a line of policemen, police cars and a fire engine. in the meantime, other protesters assembled at the corner where we started out. i think there were more than 500 people in the area of the armory. there might have been more in the park.

they brought in riot police in their stormtrooper outfits, and we saw about 20 vehicles, including the massive bushit transport hummer, but we were too far away to be seen or heard. we stood around and chatted. there were many students from the high school directly across from the armory at the protest (it was kind of heartening.) i was told that the students at the high school had standardized tests today, and had to be relocated due to this nonsense.

there were many more police than protesters at the end. a couple of the police were nasty - most seemed just bemused. we stragglers watched the stupidmobile and its protective convoy head into the distance and walked away...isn't the first amendment GREAT?

She is having some trouble attaching the video. trying to work that out.

My sister just received an e-mail from the family asking for a copy of the video. She is contacting them right now. Apparently the girl is being charged with the ever popular "disorderly conduct" for her clumsiness.

No shots of the arrest here. Just the protest.

(Note) the Shot of the cop features the ass from this graphic:

142. Here's the Write-up From WNYC. Not Much New Though.

Bush in NJ Talking about Social Security
by Bob Hennelly
UNION COUNTY, NJ, March 04, 2005 — Well over a thousand people packed the Westfield Armory in Union County New Jersey to hear President Bush make his case for overhauling social security. WNYC's Bob Hennelly was there.

President Bush told the crowd that by 2018 the social security safety net for the nation's retirees would have a major multi-billion dollar hole in it. He pledged to current recipients that their current entitlement would be unchanged.

That was of little consolation to 54 years-old Reverend Ed Allen who came to the event with an open mind.

ALLEN: I guess most of us thought most of our lives that it that was something that was going to be there. If it's changing that's certainly makes me cautious as to what the change might be.

President Bush said that his plan to have younger workers put some of their payroll tax into private savings accounts was not meant to replace social security but to enhance it. Outside there were 300 vocal protestors. Several demonstrators were arrested by police.

144. Don't we have the right to "peaceably assemble"???
Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought Americans had the right to peacefully protest?????

If you are on a public sidewalk or a park, or other public area--and you're not disrupting traffic or hurting anyone--

...isn't this a RIGHT that we have in this country????

On what grounds are they dispersing the crowds like this???

Can they do that...just because they don't want protesters?????

Can anyone shed some light?

158. Here's Emily's Side Of the Story And A Full Summary Of The Day's Events
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 08:53 PM by DistressedAmerican
Here is the full new info and a condensed version Of the day's events that were scattered throughout this thread.

My sister is having issues getting a copy off of the disk her camera she recorded it on. She can watch it. Still trying to copy it. She is working with the issue and I will post the video we have ASAP.

==========================================================

NEW INFO FIRST: My sister spoke on the phone to the father of Emily Calvin who is now at home after several hours detained and issuance of a summons for disorderly conduct. Her story is as follows (it conflicts with some of the earlier info and suggests more out of line conduct by the police than previously thought):

According to Emily, She at no time crossed the barricade. She was turned away from the front and was approached by someone coming out of the "town hall meeting". That person began yelling insults and obscenities at the crowd of protesters. Emily turned around and stretched out her arms to reveal the banner she was carrying.

At that moment she reports hearing one of the offers say "That's it. She's out of here." She was immediately grabbed by several officers who dragged her across the barricade, slammed her up against a Westfield municipal police car and cuffed. She reports being extremely confused as to why she was being grabbed as she didn't feel that she was acting any different that those around her. My sister, says that is clear from her expression in the video she shot.

She was taken and booked at the Westfield police station and held in hand cuffs for several hours. A reporter from New York's WNYC, a local NPR affiliate met up with the family when they arrived to get Emily out. Emily's father reports that the police said that 9 adults and 7 or 8 minors had been arrested in protest related activities.

Two local network affiliates, WABC and WNBC got good footage of her arrest and the arrest of a second individual up to now referred to as the "kid with the Mohawk". I still do not have his real name. If anyone sees it please let me know.

Emily's father is hiring a lawyer and has requested copies of my sister's footage. She will very likely speak to the lawyer on Emily's behalf. They have taken their own video of the damage to her wrists from the several hours wearing them in the station.

NOW A SUMMARY OF TODAY'S EVENTS (WHICH CAN ALSO BE FOUND WITH PICS ON MY WEBSITE):http://www.seedsofdoubt.com/distressedamerican/main.htm

=====================================

32. Sister Is On Phone Right Now. Protests Have Been Dispersed

============================================

===================================================

She also describes witnessing a high school aged kid with a Mohawk

arrested with the girl and another being tackled by 4 cops and held down by his neck during arrest. Kid with the Mohawk was dragged over the barricade by the police and arrested, apparently singled out from the crowd.

All protesters were herded into separated pens. They were approximately a block and a half away fenced in like sheep.

When the crowd was broken up they were herded by the police for at least 6 blocks, shouting insults and pushing the group the whole way.

=================================

Another Eyewitness Account Of The Event (posted earlier in the thread):

the police worked very hard to disperse the crowds...

some people were told to assemble in a park about 1.5 miles away from the armory. others assembled near the parking lot where pallone spoke, and walked a block or so to the armory. a block from the armory, we ran into the police and about 15 pro-bush supporters, including 4 or 5 seven year olds chanting "four more years." as more protesters arrived, the bushies disappeared, except for the older gent in the nice overcoat who told us to "get a job." they must hire one for every protest.

Nine People Near Bush Visit Arrested On Disorderly Conduct Charges

POSTED: 4:26 pm EST March 4, 2005

WESTFIELD, N.J. -- At 71-years old, John Weaver worries about who will take care of his brain-injured adult son once he is gone. And with President Bush's proposal to partially privatize Social Security, he fears for his son's financial future, too.

"It's nonsense. People like my son need a safety net; they're not going to be able to work," said Weaver, of Clark, whose 28-year-old, Greg, receives about $400 a month in Social Security benefits.

On Friday, Weaver took his worries to the streets in Westfield, outside a town hall-style meeting where Bush outlined his proposal.

Hundreds of protesters gathered for the rally before Bush's appearance and then marched down neighborhood streets to stand as close as they could to the building where the president was meeting with members of a preselected audience.

The demonstrations featured a lot of shouting and the arrests of nine people, including five juveniles, on disorderly conduct charges, police said Friday afternoon.

Jonathan Spitz, 41, of Westfield; Thomas Silva, 40, of Paterson; Gabrielle Hanlon, 21, of New Brunswick; and Emily Colvin, 18, of Westfield, all were released pending court appearances. The five juveniles -- two girls and three boys -- were released to parents or guardians, police said.

Well... HERE THEY ARE! Thanks to these brave people! I'm so glad they all got out without bloodshed, although it sounds like the police would gladly have created some. A big THANK YOU to them all, especially Emily and "the guy with the Mohawk"!!!

Message Text:

Dear Mayor McDermott and City Council Members,

I was extremely disappointed by the conduct of officers from the Westfiled Police Department during yesterday's visit by President Bush. Several witnesses to the arrest of 18 year old protester Emily Colvin, have reported that she was peacefully protesting when singeled out by your officers, grabbed, hauled OVER the barricade, slammed against a patrol car and arrested.

For more details on this and other arrests, please refer to my website (link below), where I have posted a full account of the events as witnessed by several individuals.

The fact that she was apparently singeled out of the crowd for this treatment was just a prelude to dispersing the protesters with more threats of arrest. The attempt to intimidate and harrass the protesters is self evident.

Dissent in America is crucial. Bush supporters were given a voice inside the talk. Those that oppose his policies were kept some distance (up to a mile and a half) away. This clear attempt by your police department to quite the protesters through force and intimidation is deplorable.

Please take immediate action to have the chrages of disorderly conduct levied against Ms. Colvin dismissed immediately. In addition, please conduct a full investigation into the performance of your police force at the day's events , as it is likely that others that were arrested were guilty of nothing more than expressing their Constitutionally protected right to free speech.

Sincerely,
======================

Please, take some time write a message and send it around to these folks. It is very possible if we pressure these local political goons, we can get them to drop the meaningless and bogus charges against Emily and/or others. Speak up for these folks. They are fighting for YOUR freedom!

THE PRESIDENT: Thanks for coming. (Applause.) Okay, let's get to work. Thanks for coming. A hundred years since a President has been here -- I don't know what took the other ones so long to get here. (Laughter.) Mr. Mayor, thanks. Mayor Greg McDermott, I appreciate your inviting me here, appreciate you being at the airport. (Applause.) I appreciate you and the local officials putting up with the entourage. Thank you all for coming.

My regret is Laura is not with me. She is doing great, though. She is a fabulous woman, and I'm a lucky guy that she had agreed to marry me. (Applause.)

I've got some things I want to talk about. I want to talk about freedom and peace. I want to talk about growing this economy. I want to talk about Social Security. Before I do so, I do want to say thanks to Congressman Mike Ferguson for his great leadership in the House of Representatives. (Applause.) And Maureen -- good to see you, Maureen. I see her, she's doing great. Thanks for coming.

Rodney Frelinghuysen is with us. Rodney, thank you, sir. (Applause.) Rodney and I were talking about, on Air Force One, how hard it is to be a baby boomer and trying to jog. (Laughter.) Part of the problem we're going to face in Social Security is there's a lot of baby boomers like me and Rodney who are getting ready to retire. But I'm going to wait a little bit and talk about that.

178. Why are these protesters treated like dirt, when during Clinton
freeptards and others like them did things like chant "Get out of Cheney's house", and they never seem to have run into brutal police???

While it appears that most "freeps" are lame events, I can't help but wonder how many "freeps" there'd be if during one of them, thuggish police showed up to dump ol' JimRob out of his wheelchair, or to arrest some of those middle-aged wingnuts. If that happened, I bet we'd see no more "freeps" for quite some time.
