Poll question: Which celebrity should we nominate in 2008?
Republicans have had a lot of success running celebrities for office -- Reagan, Arnold, Sonny Bono, Fred Grandy, J.C. Watts, Steve Largent, etc.

Why don't Democratic celebrities run for office more often?

1. Tim McGraw
He's a Democrat, a huge country star, has expressed interest in running for office, and would attract a lot of red state voters.

13. Is he 35?
I thought of including Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- not sure of his politics but he did take his entire crew to see F911 -- but I don't think he's old enough either.

exactly. I don't think he is even 30 years old yet. But I saw the interview where he took his crew to see Fahrenheit 9/11. I was impressed. Good for him. And he made no apologies about it.

on Dale Junior? Or McGraw? I'm surprised actually (on both). I heard Faith is a democrat too. :D I'm surprised they didn't do any campaigning for Kerry/Edwards in the southern states.

6. I've met him
Spent several hours talking to him about politics.

He's from Alabama, but he is a resident of Arizona. He wanted to run for governor of Alabama but you have to be a resident for seven years before running.

as far as I know and I remember him stating that Clinton and Carter both could relate better with blacks than any other president.

Here's an interesting quote from a Counter Punch article (I know it's counter punch, but the article is interesting anyways):

http://counterpunch.org/zirin06052004.html

Here is Charles on the Janet Jackson Super Bowl scandal: "I wish people were more irate with the Bush administration for starting a war for profit than they are with Janet Jackson for showing her breast. But that's America ... we don't know what's important and what's not important. It's much ado about nothing. It's not like she's going to traumatize anyone. Everyone is all offended now and bent out of shape. Give me a break. There are a lot of trashier things on television that what Janet Jackson did."

On basketball player Rasheed Wallace calling himself 'exploited': "If you're a grunt for CNN, those people are exploited. The guy behind the camera I talk to, he's exploited. This guy is making $17 million, and he's exploited? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. "

On the Enron scandal investigation: "Almost all those politicians took money from Enron, and there they are holding hearings. That's like O.J. Simpson getting in the Rae Carruth jury pool."

On racism: "Any time something bad happens to a black person because of racism, I feel it in my soul. I really do. You take the Abner Louima case. That let me know one thing: If some white guys wanted to stick a plunger up a black guy's butt, and I'm the black guy who happened to be around, I'd have a plunger up my butt."

On Saddam Hussein: "I think he's still alive. . . . Look at Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein - they used to both work for the United States and now they're enemies. That's part of the hypocrisy that goes on here."

On the flak celebrities get for their anti-war beliefs: "That's part of the hypocrisy that goes on when you're in the limelight - if you say something, you're anti-American or unpatriotic or too liberal. We're all free to say what we want to, but if you ever forget your place, we'll put you back in your place."

He doesn't sound very conservative. Actually he sounds kinda liberal.

...Unfortunately, his well known tax battles would be reason enough for the corporate media to feed on him. Not to mention all the anecdotal stories about his love for a certain herbal substance.

18. None of them
The repub message that being rich and elitist is good is a natural fit for celebrity candidates. It's not a good fit for Democrats.

I'd rather see Democratic candidates that send their kids to public schools, drive modest cars (themselves) and fly coach.

42. I agree 100% . . . and I'm serious . . .
Redford would be a GREAT candidate . . . hell, if they can win two terms running a third rate actor with a third rate mind (Reagan, for those too young to remember), we can certainly win with a first rate actor with a first rate mind . . . and he's an environmentalist, which is something we desperately need in the White House . . . pair him up with a VP with impeccable foreign policy and defense credentials, and we have a winner . . .

now . . . all we have to do is convince him to run . . .
