Edwards picketed over 'gay masters'
Pam Spaulding of Pam's House Blend has obtained a copy of this flyer distributed by Fred Phelps of the Westboro (Kansas) Baptist Church, expressing their intent to picket a speech by former vice presidential candidate John Edwards Mar 4.

The Westboro Baptist Church has repeatedly traveled to picket against gay rights and gays, including the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay student who was beaten to death in the late 1990s in Laramie, Wyoming. They have also rallied to celebrate Shepard's death and the death of another gay man, Scotty Joe Weaver, who was murdered in Alabama in 2004.

12. This guy's daughter just ran for City Council--she finished fourth of four
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 11:05 PM by mdguss
Phelps' daughter ran against an openly gay member of the Topeka City Council. The election was last Tuesday. Ms. Phelps finished fourth of four in that race; the openly gay member finished second, and is in a runoff later in the spring.

Phelps also tried to get the city to overturn an ordinance--that was sponsored by the openly gay member of council--that bans the city from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation in the hiring and firing of employees. The ballot question to overturn the ordinance lost 53-47.

The New York Times had a long-article about it on Monday. It was a good read. Phelps is an extremist who doesn't really seem to be welcomed in Topeka. It's the same guy that picketed Matthew Shepard's funeral; he pickted Al Gore, Sr.'s funeral too. The Time article said his church has 52 members--almost all of which are members of his extended family.

This city has been held hostage by them. We voted them down again, our biggest success was this last election. They have been doing this for years in this city, people are afraid of them but not because they do physical violence(unless you get too close to them). They are considered pestilence here, not solid citizens, have been fringe here since they arrived in the 50's.

But whether they'll DO anything is another matter.

I say give these people more rope....LOTS more rope....

Why do these people sound like they came from under the same rock as the Church of the Creator people?

The more hate they spew, the more people will realize that the so-called "christian right" are just hatemongers.

I think the best way to defuse these people is to give them LOTS of media attention, and let people see how awful they are.

At any rate, all that hatred can only come from MANY generations of cousin-on-cousin action.

The story you were speaking of

Vote in Topeka Today Hangs on Gay Rights and a Vitriolic Local Protester
By JODI WILGOREN

TOPEKA, Kan., Feb. 24 - Jael Phelps, 20, a nursing student, stood outside the City Council chamber here on a recent night holding a sign with a photograph of the councilwoman whom she hopes to unseat, Tiffany Muller, placed on a dog's body. The caption, "Mutt Muller," alluded to her family's view of homosexuals.

snip---------

The referendum, which would ban the Council from passing any ordinances specifically protecting gays for 10 years, would be the only one of its type in the nation, after Cincinnati voters in November repealed a similar measure that they passed in 1993.

The battle has become as much as anything a debate over Mr. Phelps, whose incessant daily pickets and hate-filled faxes have plagued Topeka for 14 years, yet whose opposition to the antidiscrimination ordinance is shared by many residents of this church-laden, Republican-leaning city of 125,000.

The Phelpses' tactics have turned some evangelical ministers and conservative businessmen into unlikely crusaders for gay rights, backing measures like the antidiscrimination ordinance, if only as an antidote to the family's message. And with an amendment to the State Constitution to ban same-sex marriage on the ballot in April, many other religious and civic leaders are trying mightily to stop the Phelpses from hijacking what they see as a signature issue.

As Ms. Muller and Miss Phelps go door to door in the district, talk about taxes and employment gives way to questions about sex and the Bible. Miss Phelps has been yelled off lawns when residents learned her surname, which appears on campaign fliers in only the finest print, and voters have told Ms. Muller's supporters that she would not win their votes if she ran against a pack of snakes.

I've known about the Westboro baptist Church since before anyone on this board, I guarantee it.

It's founder (and I'm using the term loosely as he basically founded it by having kids and the marrying them off) is Fred Phelps. Interestingly he used to be involved in the civil rights movement. Then he went loco.

Then, not fight back (that's where I and a few others came in, to pull him out so he wouldn't be hurt). He wanted headlines like Christians assault KU student. 47. The Phelps view of the tsunami:
From their sorry piece of shit of a site:

"The lands affected by this judgment from God aren’t just full of idolatry; we’re talking about places (think Thailand) that are hot spots where American businessmen travel for the express purpose of fornicating with young Asian children. It is a thriving industry over there; many of these girls are taken into that business when they are seven years old or younger. "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:" Col 3:5-6. And you wonder if this is the wrath of God?

Not to mention the fact that those Asian countries weren’t the only ones affected by the tsunami. Do you realize that among the dead and missing are 20,000 Swedes and over 3,000 Americans? Filthy Swedes went to Thailand - world epicenter of child sex traffic - to rape and sodomize little Thai boys and girls. 20,000 dead Swedes is to Sweden's population of 9 million as 650,000 would be to America's 290 million population. We sincerely hope and pray that all 20,000 Swedes are dead, their bodies bloated on the ground or in mass graves or floating at sea feeding sharks and fishes or in the bellies of thousands of crocodiles washed ashore by tsunamis. These filthy, faggot Swedes have a satanic, draconian law criminalizing Gospel preaching, under which they prosecuted, convicted and sentenced Pastor Ake Green to jail - thereby incurring God's irreversible wrath: "He suffered no man to do them wrong; yea, he reproved kings for their sakes; Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm." Psa. 105:14,15. America, who is awash in diseased fag feces & semen, and is an apostate land of the sodomite damned. Let us pray that God will send a massive Tsunami to totally devastate the North American continent with 1000-foot walls of water doing 500 mph -- even as islands in southern Asia have recently been laid waste, with but a small remnant surviving. And you wonder if this is the wrath of God?"

57. That's Not Just Hateful, It's Stupid
so, the tsunami is God's punishment for these countries where they exploit children through prostitution?

I am not even going to begin to debate that from a theological standpoint, but one of the tragedies on top of this tragedy is it may set the stage for more children to be exploited. Say a child survives, but his/her family (parents)are killed - the child is then vulnerable to being kidnapped by exploiters claiming they are going to help him/her.

The NGOs and Govts have been trying to put in place safeties to see to it that this doesn't happen, but how effective can they really be given the overwhelming scope of the disaster?

Now before anyone takes offense. I have nothing against normal people's expressions of faith, or the religious.

56. So who is printing up and passing out the counter flier's?
I already mentioned that Liberal Kansans should be well prepared with fliers of their own clearly detailing the Gannon/Guckert scandal and poppy's pedophile scandals. Make sure to dress like one of the churchgoing crowd and quietly distribute the fliers among the crowd. No loud protests, just quiet work.

These church goer's likely don't know what the bushitler's have been up to all these years and they need to be educated!

59. Shouldn't Christians be spending their time helping those less fortunate?
Doesn't God call them to be out doing good works, instead of spending their time protesting John Edwards?

Particularly since Kerry and Edwards' articulated views on gay marriage/civil union are nearly identical to that of their beloved George W. Bush! Bush, Kerry and Edwards all supported civil unions (Georgie said it on ABC News during the campaign, which all the homophobes seem to forget) and said they were against gay marriage. Except for the Constitutional amendment, their views are exactly the same. So why aren't they going to protest their very own "filthy fag agenda" supporter, George W. Bush?

I'd ask God to have mercy on these cretins' souls, but I have better things to do than waste my breath on that.

There ought to be enough lawsuit or IRS violation material

68. You would have to marry a Phelps to do that,
because his entire cult is related to one another by blood or marriage.

Are you willing to make the sacrifice? Frankly, I think I would rather give Dick Cheney a rimjob than marry a Phelps! :scared:

Phelps and his clan are anything but Christian. I'd love to see the look on Phelps' face when he faces judgment and is sent to Hell.

BTW, what do you call a Bible without the 4 Gospels? A Republican Bible!

66. Does this mean Phelps is a proud Republican and Bush supporter?
He sees himself as on the opposite political side of Kerry/Edwards and emphasizes he's against Democrats.

Phelps identifies with Bush and the Republicans. Isn't that special?

67. Actually, Phelps is a registered Democrat, sad to say.
He has even run a few times in Democratic primaries and had his picture made with Al Gore at a party function back in the 80s.

Of course, I think it's clear that he's more more authentically a Democrat than he is a Christian. Besides, even the best families have a member of whom they are deeply ashamed.

71. Believe me, I'm no fan of Phelps. Had some dealings with the cult
back in '97 when I put up one of the first anti-Phelps websites, long before most people here had any idea who he was. They're utter loons and quite dangerous.

But the fact remains that he is a registered Democrat.

Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 07:04 PM by blm
Mocking Democrats is a standard operation of the Republicans.

Condemning Democrats as valueless is a standard tactic of the Republican's permanent campaign against Democrats.

Phelps is operating as a Republican just as surely as Richard Perle or Zell Miller.

75. Phelps picketed Reagan's funeral.
In Phred's own words:

WBC to picket funeral proceedings of Ronald Reagan June 10 at the Capitol Rotunda and June 11 at the National Cathedral -- in religious protest & warning to a doomed nation:

Reagan is in Hell!

He betrayed the Great King! He gave America to sodomites!

Sure, it's possible that Phelps did this in order to preserve his cover as a sooper-dooper-extra-double-secret-agent, but there's no need to reach for the tinfoil quite so quickly when you consider that Phelps's activities are always calculated to inflict maximum public offense and thus generate as much publicity as possible.

Do I think that Phelps is an authentic Democrat? Of course not. Neither do I think he's an authentic Christian.

74. I would be interested in knowing if they really did
I've been following this story for a few days. The links from the papers and TV (via internet) do not indicate that any picketers were there, and I checked to see any news stories on that smear-ugly site. So far, there are none. With the municipality rule in hiring gays not overturned last week, I suspect those ilk lost some steam.

They have updated their picket schedule. I don't intend to solicit or criticize this cult on their site. They will stalk anyone who doesn't agree with them, whether they are freepers or not, especially since they don't like Bush either.

80. I want to see this everywhere: On TV, in newspapers, radio: Everywhere
Spread it around. This is how Republicans think.

ALL REPUBLICANS

Every single one of those motherfucking assholes.

I don't care if it's an unfair representation of the reich wing. They have been marginalizing us for years based on lesser shit than this.

Jerry Falwell cites 9/11 as an expression of God's wrath, and now Phelps says that God killed Edward's son as punishment for supporting homosexuals???

This is the compassion, this is the moral clarity, this is the family values I have heard so much about?

Compassionate Conservatives: Fred Phelps and the BTK killer.

Both from my state, Kansas. Red as red gets.

Was this the "morality" and "Red State Values" that brought so many to the polls for Bush?

84. Fred Phelps is actually an asset to us
He says outright what a lot of the fundies believe, but are too chickenshit to say. And by doing so, he helps our cause immensely. People who think the extreme fundies are just pious, goodhearted people need only take one look at good ol Fred making a fool of himself at one of his pickets to see where much of the fundie movement is really coming from and what their real agenda is.
