Oregon Paper Finds Itself in Middle of Anti-AARP Ad Controversy

By Brian Orloff

Published: March 04, 2005 4:00 PM ET updated 5:15 PM

NEW YORK The Portland (Ore.) Tribune, a bi-weekly city paper, unwittingly found itself embroiled in ongoing national controversy after a photograph taken without permission from its Web site was used in a national ad linking the American Association of Retired People (AARP) with gay marriage. The now-infamous image depicts two men, Rick Raymen and Steven Hansen of Portland, Ore., kissing while standing in line outside the Multnomah Building last year after the county began issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.

The Tribune's executive editor, Dwight Jaynes, said today in his paper that legal action against Mark Montini International, the company that produced the ad for USA Next, a conservative organization, is possible. The ad ran in the online conservative magazine The American Spectator., and elsewhere on the Web. Appropriating the photograph violates copyright law and it is not the paper's policy to sell photographs for commercial use without the permission of its subjects.

"I will state the position of this newspaper as clearly as I can," Jaynes wrote in an e-mail to Mark Montini, according to the article. "That picture belongs to us and we take copyright infringement very seriously."

11. Done. Thanks for posting this. We can't let them slip by.
I can't help but be struck by the contrast between the poisonous hate and lies embodied in this add and the actual people represented: a soldier serving honerably and two loving people in a gentle embrace. Horrible how these vipers have taken these honorable and decent images and twisted them to fit their destructive goals.

I'm cheering for the copyright law to come down hard on these monsters.

By the way, do you have a link to send supportive email to the editor of the newspaper that is opposing the USANext thugs? Or is something else being organized to demonstrate broad support for their stand?

Unbelievable... they just never ever ever ever stop!

Hey, I'm new to the boards... can anyone answer a quick couple questions?

I think i get it, but just in case, what's a kick?
Also, I can't find ANY info here on the site on how to upload a pic into a msg., and I've been looking for the last 45 minutes. Can anyone refer me to such info?
Thanx!
