Jim Gibbons Now Trying to Defend His Hate Speech
First it was FOX News, now Congressman Jim Gibbons himself is trying to defend both his hate-filled Elko speech AND his plagiarism in an editorial in the Lahotan Valley News:

http://www.lahontanvalleynews.com/article/20050305/Opinion/103050013&SearchID=73201031953162

This from Jon Summers of the Nevada State Democratic Party:

"Today, Rep. Jim Gibbons (R-NV) defended his plagiarized speech in an editorial written to a Nevada Newspaper where he says he was 'spun out of context' by the Democratic Party. He must have forgotten that people were able to read a detailed account of the speech in the Elko Daily Free Press. He also must have forgotten that what he said was completely detailed in the original speech delivered in 2003 by the Alabama auditor from which Gibbons plagiarized 15 of 21 paragraphs nearly word for word. He left that part out of his letter. It’s amazing that, once again, Jim Gibbons claims he was taken out of context, jut like he did when he called people who questioned George Bush’s corporate funded Inauguration events 'communists'. Jim Gibbons’ words speak for themselves, and what they have to say isn’t pretty."

And get this new garbage from Gibbons:

"I cannot help but put myself in the place of our brave soldiers who are fighting the war on terrorism, while the new generation of Jane Fonda's - people like Michael Moore- - deride their efforts. Further, I know that such efforts to break our resolve in Iraq are also used to inspire the insurgents to continue their assault against the elected Iraqi government, the Iraqi people, and our soldiers. While I respect their right to free speech, I also have the obligation to exercise my right to free speech when I believe that their words harm our soldiers."

See? Attacking Gibbons for being an idiot is now equivalent to attacking American soldiers.

4. We tend to go to extremes in Nevada...
electing Reid and Gibbons in the same state.

Yep, we're a bit conflicted....

7. Kudos for Reid, though...
I just came from the "Nix the Fix" in Phoenix. This is a GREAT leader for the Dems. I know he isn't pure enough for some Dems, but as a fellow red stater, I appreciate Reid more than most.

3. I think Gibbons' and Hannity's remarks have a suspicious
similarity too;

8. These guys don't cook up their own defenses--it's done in the heart of DC
at the Heritage Foundation.

They couldn't come up with an original idea if it would save their life.

5. Well, then, why doesn't he put himself in the place of our brave
soldiers? Pick up a rifle and go. And good luck to him.

9. I'm sure we can find some that are being re-upped who would be happy
to offer him their one way ticket to Fallujah--including the frequent flyer miles.

10. Any takers?
Who wants to bet on how many of the paragraphs of his response letter are also plagarized?

Its not like the repukes don't have plenty of green, this dude needs a grant for the Heritage Foundation to hire his own speech writers.

14. look like Gibbons is just expanding on remarks
he made a couple of days ago:

http://www.krnv.com/Global/story.asp?S=3019317&nav=8faOWzsO

"I've served our country overseas in war ... twice. What many people don't realize is that our troops in battle, no matter how far from home they may be, still know what is going on the United States.

"They see the kinds of statements from the Michael Moores of this world just as I witnessed the antics of Jane Fonda during the Vietnam War.

"I see similar actions on the part of some members of the entertainment community today, and I cannot help but put myself in the place of our brave soldiers who are fighting the war on terrorism, while the new generation of Jane Fonda's--people like Michael Moore--deride their efforts. Today, such efforts to break our resolve in Iraq are also used to inspire the insurgents to continue their assault against the elected Iraqi government, the Iraqi people, and our soldiers.

"I support our troops, and I don't apologize for that. I have been with them in Nevada, Iraq, Afghanistan, and at Walter Reed Hospital where they are being treated for their wounds. It wasn't that long ago that Hollywood established a climate that made our returning troops feel ostracized from society. I feels quite strongly about ensuring that these brave men and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq never come home to the same "welcome" that returning soldiers received coming home from Vietnam.

"In recent months, we've witnessed the spread of freedom in places many of us didn't think we would see it in our lifetimes. Freedom is taking hold in Afghanistan, the Ukraine, amongst the Palestinian people, in Lebanon, in Egypt and even in Saudi Arabia. This is only occurring because of the spread of freedom abroad - especially in some of our more troubling regions - will ultimately make us safer at home. That spread of freedom is in the hands of many American troops, and indeed, Nevada troops, who are voluntarily serving this great nation in uniform."

15. Get this from Elko (Nevada) County Commissioner John Ellison
"Ellison said he did not believe Gibbons remarks were partisan in nature.

'To me he was not on a direct attack against the Democratic Party,' he said.

Ellison said Gibbons was caught up in the atmosphere of the Lincoln Day dinner.

'He was tied up to the excitement of what Lincoln would have done if he had been here today,' Ellison said.

From http://www.elkodaily.com/articles/2005/03/05/news/local/news4.txt

(and how come the spell-checker keeps trying to change 'elko' to 'elk')
