They have seen the light....
Mitch McConnell, on MTP this morning, said the Dems and Repubs should sit down in a "bi-partisan" way and figure out a way to 'fix' Social Security. "Bi-partisanship" ?? That seems to be quite a detour from where they've been going for the last 4 years? Why? Because they see the writing on the wall?

The Democrats should agree to this "bi-partisan" offer of the Repubs. Because the longer they can keep Social Security on the front burner, the better is for the Democratic Party, not to mention the future retirees of this country. It's not an issue the Repubs are comfortable discussing.

The Repubs must be asking Bush, "Why did you say you were going to keep this debate going for the next 60 days???" We would like to sweep it under the rug right now and forget about it. Democrats should assist Mr Bush in keeping this issue alive, just for the discomfort of his fellow Republicans. :)

1. Excellent - when they issue a call for "bi-partisanship", they're beaten
I like Harry Reid's position on this, which I think is, "When Bush renounces the concept of private accounts, we'll talk."

Giev'em hell, Harry!

3. You make an excellent point - but did you notice that all the
repugs pundits would not answer any question? Russert put a very straight forward question to McConnell about Bush's SS plan and private accounts and McConnell just blew it off and started mouthing the usual talking points of non-answering answering (he shifted the talk from what Bush proposes to what Clinton said, demanded the Dems offer a plan, etc. - he never offered up anything that is remotely a repug plan or how to pay for it). Russert just let it fly by without reining him in and restating the question for an answer. I wrote Russert an email and quoted Jon Stewart. "Stop it. Your are hurting the country." Don't expect anything to change but hopefully today's journalists are starting to get a little touchy about their interviewing skills and allowing the guests the ability to steer the discussion away from ever answering anything. Russert is suppose to be better than than.

McConnell was trying to use a national audience to pretend the repugs are interested in a bi-partisan effort for Social Security. Looks good in the replays but the only thing they are really offering is either get on board with this mythical plan or we will try to burn you as obstructionists. Think they think that faux bi-partisanship and bully tactics are the way to keep pushing their agenda. McConnell is living in his crystal bubble inside the beltway - Dems are growing a backbone and pushing back, don't think he got the memo.

9. I missed the show -- thanks for the recap
I'm going to write an e-mail to Russert along the lines of yours. I am soooooooooo tired of these so-called journalists rolling over and playing dead for the Repubs.

2. I just feel that by McConnell expressing his
desire for bipartisanship, he wants to muzzle the Dems. I'm more in favor of very separate opinions on this issue because only then will people see the distinct differences in thinking between the parties. But I'm all for keeping this discussion in the forefront. Maybe people will get a clue that this admin is not concerned with most of our 'best interests'.

4. TRAP! Trap alert! Another trap was being set up by Hager this morning.
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 01:05 PM by higher class
There big problem is that they have NO PLAN! They believed in magic. It isn't working for them. THEY HAVE NO PLAN....they wanted the conversion of our money to the corporations through a simple gesture such as putting the hand into a top-hat and pulling out a rabbit.

THEY HAVE NO PLAN. This is a trap to get the Dems who have said there is no reason to change anything except to work on something for protecting ss beyond 2042/2052.

IF THE DEMS SIT DOWN - IT WILL SEND A SIGNAL THAT A CHANGE HAS TO TAKE PLACE. WRITE TO YOUR SENATOR AND CONGRESSMAN. DO NOT SIT DOWN WITH THEM. THEY JUST WANT IDEAS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NONE.

The same with Hager - he puts something out there and if the Dems comment on it - they are hooked.

THIS IS CLASSIC ROVIAN. DON'T LET IT HAPPEN!

YOU KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THE DEMS SIT DOWN - THEY WILL TURN AROUND AND CRUCIFY US.

THE DEMS HAVE ALREADY TAKEN A POSTION - NOTHING NEED BE DONE except working on the future. DON'T LET US GET CRUCIFIED BY ROVE, FRIST, CHENEY, AND THE CEO'S AND STOCKHOLDERS.

7. Heck, why even filibuster? They don't have the votes.
Let them go down on record as wanting to destroy Social Security.

8. Perhaps Durbin had the right approach...
We're willing to sit down and discuss anything but we are going to sit down and discuss how to destroy Social Security...(paraphrasing).

11. Bipartisan?
Any Dem who would work with these folks after the way they have been treated has the self-esteem of an abused dog.
