No senate leader has ever totally suited me. Most likely, none ever will, unless I can swing getting elected to the senate and then bluff my way into the leadership. Hell, I'd probably even be disappointed by my own voting record.

In some areas, like pro-choice, he ain't half bad at all.

On almost any other issue, Joe is as progressive as almost any Democrat in the Senate.

I think they'd be surprised. I find this source the best. If anyone has a better one, I'd love to hear about it.

There are many Democrats with FAR worse overall records than Lieberman, but for some reason, he is DU's designated whipping boy. I don't get it, personally.

Kerry is very much a progressive, but gets called "Repub-lite" because of the war vote.

Apparently DU's number one issue for the most part is the war. If Joe wasn't a hawk, we'd like him fine. If Kerry didn't show the occasional hawkish tendancy, we'd like him fine too.

... I'd rather get a 1/2 loaf, than no bread at all. Maybe it's from being raised Catholic, but I'm also grateful for life's small mercies, and not merely its large ones.

There's one inescapable point that they can't address though (even if they choose to remain in denial about the effect that pandering to the right has on the electorate's perception of the Democratic party- as evidenced by the continuing losses over the past decade):

If there are no consequences to selling out one's constituents, then there's no incentive not to take the money (in the bankruptcy matter, this is actually inexcusable PERIOD- as the Credit card companies "donate" OVERWHELMINGLY to Republicans- so this vote actually strengthens their hands and works to defeat other Dems who run).

Reid should NEVER have been given this post. Sure, he "talks tough" and for some, that's a welcome change from the milquetoast Daschle. However, his record thus far is a big fat ZERO. His bark is proving worse than his bite.

Morover, I think that's going to continue. People who expect the anti-choice Reid to lead a filibuster against far-right Supreme Court judges who WILL overturn Roe v. Wade are going to be sorely disappointed.

Even more than a majority party, an opposition party needs to enforce discipline. It needs to not only discourage double-dealing and duplicity, it needs to actively punish it. How to do that? Well, look at how the Republicans do it....

I'll also add this- if the Dems prove unwilling or incapable of unseating members who continue to side with Republicans to impose irrational, self-destructive policies on the nation- they're going to continue to lose ground all over the country-

Moreover, if the Dems won't put their house in order- then the Greens will have a go at it by running their own candidates....
