Is 24-hour news coverage a bad idea....?
Each day, they seem to deteriorate another degree. If it's not a car chase, it is a panel discussion about Michael Jackson or Scott Peterson or soem celebrity divorce. It is not about news.

Perhaps it is impossible to report news around the clock without extensive repetition? Especially when you have such a limited number of "reporters". Perhaps they should not call themselves "news" networks?

1. Most those people are not even reporters.

2. It is a bad idea
because it leads naturally to an emphasis on quantity not quality. It is antithetical to serious investigative journalism.

3. It's a great idea! wish we had it.
extension repetition? There are enough important stories to be covered, it's just that true coverage is educational and we can't have that!

4. It is a great concept taken to the depths of hell by management
in media. Everything is packaged for a defined consumer. The numbers of those consumers are 'thought' by the media management to pay the bills of operating and providing a profit margin. In that consideration, there is virtually no thought to product quality. Hence, concept great, execution awful.

Lest one think that it is indigenous to just ONE outfit, note the look and feel of all of them are the same. Original thinkers are invited to practice their crafts elsewhere. Groupthink rules the environs of the m$m.

5. I don't think the cable news networks think that anyone watches...
them for big blocks of time. I think they believe that either your TV is on as noise in the background or that you watch 10 or 15 minutes at most in any one time period and then you shut it off or go to some regular program. I would guess that is what their polling tells them concerning their viewers. I think it's great if you want to see what is happening to be able to turn on the TV, find out at any hour of the day or night and go back to whatever you were doing instead of waiting for 5pm or 6 pm or for the 5 minute news at each hour on the radio.
