the reign of witches
"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles.

It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt.

If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

-- Thomas Jefferson, in a letter of 1798, after the passage of the Sedition Act.

1. Love this quote. wT2
(It's my sig line).

It's one of the few things that give me hope on a daily basis that someday, this particular nightmare will be behind us. It reminds me that our government has imposted horrors on its population before that have been later repealed. It helps to have a long-term, historical perspective.

Did you find that in the book you are reading?

4. nope ...
i'm off to my town's Democratic Committee meeting and i was looking for a few good quotes to liven things up ... these people are going to hate me ... but that's OK ...

i'm trying to get my town to take a stand on national issues and i doubt they'll have any interest whatsoever in doing so ... their view of a "really active committee" is to donate the $175. we raise (that's a total for the entire committee) to local Democratic candidates ...

my goal is to call for a "new American revolution" ... see a gap there ???

5. You go, wT2
Since it is in your nature to ferret out undesirables and not quit until you do... you're bound to be successful

'Course it might take you a while, but somehow I think that you are up to the task.

Good luck to you... and please, have some fun while you are at it!

7. I felt the same way
and decided instead, to get busy with MoveOn instead. When the Democrats
find their collective backbones (other than a few marvelous ones, such
as my Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman Harry Conyers for instance,
the party is too wishy-washy and this "move to the center" thing, they
can KEEP.

MoveOn is planning to MoveON!

2. The rain of blunt force trauma
These are brutes with WMD, not witches with spells. The citizens have been cowed with bullying, traumatized with low blows.

TJ had an African American woman in the bedroom. Maybe he had a witch in there too.

From your sig, it appears you don't expect that with "patience...spells dissolve...people recovering their true sight...patience til luck turns."

6. How long must we be patient
til luck turns, spells dissolve and the people recover their true sight?

Is patience its own reward?

8. Elizabeth Edwards should get the credit for pointing this quote out to DU
Barbra Streisand used it about two days later on her own website, by the way. She must be a DU reader.

9. I would RELISH a real reign of witches more than what we have now.
We could start with Glenda, Sabrina and Samantha.

14. AFAIK, Elizabeth Edwards was the only person to use it.
She posted it here at DU saying that she read it recently in R.B. Bernstein's recent Jefferson biography. This was only a couple days after the election. Within three days, Streisand posted the quote at her site without saying where she got it.

20. Thomas Jefferson was a man.
And he clearly meant it in a non-gender specific manner, since he was definitely referring to men.

23. No. He considered "witches" those who avoided Rationalism.
At least one of the Salem witches was a man.

From Elizabeth Edwards

Since I cannot start a thread (which I think is a good rule by the way), I have to hijack one -- at least briefly. I do want this thread to continue on, though, because the topic is so important. (Moderators can feel free to move this, of course.)

But I also had something I wanted to say to all of you. You know that I read DU and have for quite some time, long before any of you knew my name. I really appreciate the support you have given me on this latest hurdle and before. It means a lot to me and to John.

Now that I have more time, I will post some, too. But today I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson. This is from the new Bernstein biography of Jefferson. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."
