Tell the FCC to STOP FAKE NEWS!
Yesterday, The New York Times broke a major story outlining how the Bush administration has used millions of dollars of taxpayer money to produce and disseminate fake news programs that support their partisan political agenda.

These government-produced segments have frequently aired on broadcast TV stations across the country without proper disclosure.

Not only is this unacceptable, it is also illegal.

Take action today to help us Start Change:
Send a message to the FCC and ask them to STOP FAKE NEWS

In the end this is very simple.
Our broadcast television media operates on public airwaves.
We have rules about how these airwaves can be used.
We insist that the practice of local news stations airing government funded and produced propaganda without disclosure cease immediately.

Start Change Today: visit www.StopFakeNews.org and tell the FCC to stop the Bush Administration’s unlawful use of public funds for partisan propaganda.

======

You can also Start Change by calling these national television networks and demanding that they adopt a policy by which any of their local television stations must clearly disclose the source of any "newscasts" that are actually produced by the government.

UPN Television: 310-575-7000

Please remember to be firm but polite when you call.

1. How about we all howl that they are obscene (which they are to me)
"Obscene" is a word which seems to get noticed.

2. I signed it and am passing it along. But, why can't we get a lawyer
to go after them, if it's illegal? Why does no one seem to want to take any of these cases. All the "big name" lawyers who know all the tricks seem to be in the pockets of the Repugs, aren't there any who are Democrats left? :eyes: We've got to start finding some. There's too much that's going on that gets pushed aside.

I'm sure we could raise the money over the internet to hire a good one, but we'd have to make sure he or she was absolutely without any ties to the Repugs and totally believed in the cause by examining their past track record.

5. I think the problem is the case, not the counsel
I am an attorney and I agonize over the fact that there is no effective ethics enforcement regime right now. Obviously, I'm not eager to return to the days of open-ended and expensive Independent Counsels, but watching Congress emasculate the Ethics Committee, and seeing Ronnie Earle attacked just turns my stomach.

Even if there were a Democratic US Attorney or similar watchdog, I'm not sure this could be remedied. I don't see any criminal violation. As a civil matter, I can't see how any taxpayers have standing to challenge this -- I don't see that it broke any laws. It is really a classic case of where the legal system relies on politics to remedy the issue.

But I hear you.

BOB EDWARDS SAYS CURRENT PERIOD LIKE MCCARTHY ERA
HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT
Mar. 11, 2005

DANVILLE-- Louisville native Bob Edwards warned last night that the United States is in a period like the McCarthy era of the 1950s, in which the government is stifling political dissent while the news media and the public fail to speak out in vigorous opposition.
Speaking at Centre College, Edwards, a host for XM Satellite Radio, said the "Bush administration holds reporters in contempt" and has become the "all-time champion of information control."

7. This would stop the Daily Show also
Do you want to end that show that although boldly claims to be fake news, has more truth than the main stream media whores?

9. Don't get me wrong! I am in favor of anything that will stop the media
from being nothing more than state controlled propaganda machines.
I just see this as being something that the fundies would use to stop shows like The Daily Show.
Maybe we could laugh at them as they tried.
