2. Dumb question but...
what does this mean?

Let's say Dean doesn't win a single primary, yet he has the most delegates... would he be nominated?

I don't get how the primary/delegate thing works. I just assumed that whoever won the primary automatically got the most delegates from that state.

5. You're right, but there also are "superdelegates"
Elected officials and others who pledge their support to one candidate.

Dean, or anyone, would have to have the majority of superdelegates, plus come in closely with regular delegates. But, yes, it is theoretically possible for someone to win the nomination without winning a single primary. It probably won't happen, though, because if you keep losing, your superdelegate endorsements dry up, and (usually) your proportion of the vote goes down in the next election.

6. There are both pledged and unpledged delegates

There are 802 unpledged delegates, well short of a majority.

7. What happens to Gep's superdelegates?
Are they free to endorse someone else now, or does Gep send them somewhere, or what?

14. My understanding is that on the FIRST ballot,
delegates are obligated to vote for the person they are pledged to.
Since this year it is very unlikely that any one candidate will have the majority of delegates, there will be more than one ballot to pick a nominee. On the 2nd and subsequent ballots delegates can switch their votes.

9. Dean's delegates are largely superdelegates, who I think, are
beholden to noone but themselves and can change their minds on a whim.
When the candidate they have announced for is no longer viable in their opinion, I think they can just attach themselves to someone who is.

10. Now this is cute
How many delegates did anyone win in Iowa? Where are the rest of these numbers coming from?

Superdelegates? That is the cute part. A superdelegate "pledge" is worth the air it's written on. Nobody has a superdelegate vote until the convention opens. Then the balloting starts and they vote along with the state tallies.

Using them in a newstory is a convenient fiction designed to create news but, like a lot of news, its bull. If Dean loses in NH, you can bet his so-called superdelegate majority will evaporate into the ether.

Doesn't anyone around here know how the game is played?

13. Iowa breakdown
Kerry - 20
Edwards - 18
Dean - 7

Numbers are from the Goobergunch Political Report and may or may not reflect the AP calculations.
