My letter to Akaka
Dear Senator Akaka:

Your vote against the Cantwell amendment to strip the ANWR provision out of the budget is a shameful, disgusting and cynical move. Nothing enrages me more than seeing democrats once again aiding and abetting this lying, corrupt and morally repugnant administration. Just two democratic votes—yours along with Landrieu's or Inouye's—could have removed this dubious item from the bill. But instead of protecting the wildlife refuge set aside by President Eisenhower, you chose to side with Big Oil, casting your vote to allow them to rape and pillage one of the last remaining pristine lands in this once beautiful nation. I have no doubt that if oil were discovered in the Grand Canyon or underneath Washington's skull on Mount Rushmore, you would vote to allow Exxon to drill there, too.

As you can see, I am not from Hawaii, so I know you will not respond to this. It is doubtful my letter will even cross your desk. But on the off chance that you do happen to read this, please know that drilling ANWR does not concern just the citizens of Hawaii, but all Americans. Limiting your correspondence to your constituents on matters of national importance is almost—but not quite—as cynical as the vote you cast today.

Shame on you.

Being pissed off to no end does help me write a decent letter.

I am part Hawaiian, and I would like to apologize for the part that Senator Akaka played in lending his support towards the destruction
of the Aina(land).

I guess that while he has Hawaiian blood, and even looks Hawaiian, with this vote he has shown that he does not possess a Hawaiian love of the land or a true Hawaiian spirit

I can only suspect that the Republican leadership promised to allow any legislation regarding Hawaiian sovreignty to come to the floor of the Senate, and like the Hawaiians who believed the missionaries,
he will discover that what he gets and what he was told he would get
are two very different things.

Once again I apologize for his vote.

5. you both wrote wonderful letters.
this day, like the bankruptcy vote, simply underscores the problems with the democratic party -- especially at this level.

the dems will remain in a backwater until they figure out how to pull together.

sad to say the dems are not there yet.

7. I might have ended it with "I hope you choke on ANWR oil..."
but that might have brought a knock on my door in the middle of the night.

Your's is a classy letter! Nice job... :toast:

9. For those of us who are past or future tourists of Hawaii,
we need to explain how are destination choices may change. Would the oil-soaked Senators vote for a wind farm on Kapalua or maybe fully blocking the views of Kilauea or Diamond Head. This was beyond disappointing.

Excellent letter.
