Dems should propose a ban on the exportation of oil from ANWR
If we're going to allow oil companies to drill in ANWR, the least we can do is make sure that the oil is sold to Americans. Seriously, why should we allow American oil to be sold to the Chinese?

2. But wouldn't that be...(gasp)...socialism?
How can the government control Free Enterprise™?

BTW, promises to supply the West Coast with oil from Alaska went by the wayside as soon as they got the pipeline built. As I understand it, almost all of the oil pumped in Alaska nowdays is sold to Japan. More profit, I guess...

4. Nope -- it's nationalism. "American oil for Americans."
If the Republicans want to defend the right of oil companies to profit from exporting a scarce national resources to other countries, let them.

6. Right, nobody debates that the oil is currently in the commons.
The issue is whether we choose to let corporations profitteer off the commons or use it for the good of the people who supposedly own it.

7. Correct me if I'm wrong, but, they already do this with redwoods
I've heard that much of the timber from redwood forests in the Pacific Northwest is sent to Japan, even though Japan has its own redwood forests. Why? Because Japan reveres its redwoods, whereas the United State$$$...well, you get the picture.

3. I believe Cantwell tried to put something to that effect into the
Amendment or bill but the Republicans wouldn't allow it.

They argue that we need this to have more energy independence yet they refuse to require the oil be used in the US.

5. We pretty much never agree, except here, it seems.
But a horrible thing has happened. I can't forget that. We're destroying something unique for a short-term gain. Unthinkable!

8. Ok, WHO ELSE heard the piece
on the radio about how the oil companies had actually backed off drilling in ANWAR because they thought the oil quality would only be good enough to sell to Asia??? Am I losing my mind totally?

10. AHA!
Kelpie Wilson says in Truthout today:
"Some of the traditional allies like Big Oil itself have lost their appetite for the wildlife refuge. BP, Conoco-Phillips and Chevron-Texaco have all pulled out of Arctic Power, the industry group lobbying for ANWR access. ANWR's oil pool is too small and not worth the trouble."
