ANWR Bill. Why were the 2 Democratic Senators from Hawaii Not on Board
I find this puzzling on a bill of this importance. Please enlighten me and those Americans living and working overseas (like me).

1. When I worked on the North Slope
it was very common to see Hawaiians working the oil fields. They work their 2 weeks on and then fly home to paradise to warm up for the next 2 weeks.

3. sucks
The whole thing sucks.

People in America, especially politicians, have collectively sold their souls to the devil, thinking that he's a god with a big piggy bank for them to raid.

4. One thing that comes to mind . . .
I've heard it mentioned that the oil from ANWR is destined for Japan.

Huge amounts of Hawaiian resort property and the like is owned by Japanese concerns.

Could there be a link?

12. "Huge amounts of Hawaiian...property...is owned by Japanese"
Yeah, reminds me of that old joke:

Two Japanese officials were standing on the deck of the Missouri waiting for the surrender papers to be signed. One looked to the other and said, "Next time, we'll buy Hawaii..."

5. I got an idea
We should sell Hawaii to Haliburton and see if they like that.

6. Native Tribes
As I understand it, native tribes in Alaska favored drilling. Since Hawaii also has a large native population, its senators wanted to respect that.

7. Actually
the "native-owned" corporations, the largest of which greatly benefits Sen. Ted Stevens financially, favor drilling.

9. But how come when native tribes want to put up a casino
non natives become the moral majority and police squad.... seems like "natives" are used to when it is the benefit of the elite

10. It's an old scam
Like when white businessmen would put up a black guy as the "president" of their company so they could get contracts set aside for minority companies.
