that you do unto me.
Years ago I worked for a family run law office. The father was a well known and highly respected criminal attorney and his sons joined his firm as soon as they were licensed. The father was a generous and flamboyant man, who did not keep banker's hours because of his age, years in the business and reputation -- he didn't have to. It was a cold December day when a white haired, bearded fellow with no shoes or coat came into the lobby of the office. I greeted him and asked him if I could help him. He said his name was Jesus and he would like to see the patriarch of the firm, whom he called by name. I apologized to him that the father was not in and asked if he wanted to make an appointment. He simply stated that he would wait in the lobby for him. I went to all of the sons, asking them if they would take a few minutes to see if they could help the man. They refused, they were too busy to waste their time with a homeless man or a "walk off" from the VA hospital that was a few miles down the road. Mind you, these men claim to be good Christians and their father had the policy that you never turn anyone away, no one was too insignificant to talk to. The poor farmer or worker you talk to today to try to relieve anxieties or explain a matter may be the plaintiff that needs you tomorrow.
I offered the man coffee and I tried to make him comfortable. He waited for hours. This was a day when the father had no appointments, and he called in to check his messages and to tell me he had decided he wasn't going to come in. I explained to him about Jesus in the lobby and he told me to have one his sons talk with him. Again I went to the sons and again they refused to talk to Jesus. Lunch time came and went (the office was opened during the lunch hour so the man remained), the boys went to lunch and returned, ignoring Jesus and returning to their "busy" schedules.
At about 3:30 I realized Jesus had left. I had not heard the door open and he never said a word. At that moment I realized that Jesus had left the building.
It still breaks my heart that they never took the time and I can vividly picture the man. I never say him again and have no idea where he came from.
Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me!
(Edited to add: The father was a compassionate member of the Democratic Party. They are all repukes now.)
