The case of Terri Schiavo raises complex issues. Yet in instances like this one, where there are serious questions and substantial doubts, our society, our laws, and our courts should have a presumption in favor of life. Those who live at the mercy of others deserve our special care and concern. It should be our goal as a nation to build a culture of life, where all Americans are valued, welcomed, and protected - and that culture of life must extend to individuals with disabilities.

If there were a case such as bankruptcy against Terry, her husband would be next in line for them to go after...not her parents.

I'm sick of these repugnant neocons ranting about how Mikey is supposedly making money off of killing her for the life insurance.

Even if he's only being charged on par with a full care nursing home for the level she's on now, they are charging 6000 dollars + a month...

10 years = 720,000

I can garuntee her insurance stopped paying for this as it is 'extended care with a doctor's ruling that she is brain dead that has been verified.

These people who are constantly talking about her don't seem to understand that this really is just a family fight, it's the same as the fight that we had over my grandmother after she'd already had so many strokes that she couldn't recognize either of her children, let alone her grandchildren. And she wasn't brain dead, just brain scrambled.

My uncle wanted her put onto artificial life support when her last stroke left her comatose and disconnected whatever part of her brain it is that controls her liver and kidneys. My mother had the power of attourney and kept my grandmother onto the machines only long enough for every member of the family to be able to say goodbye.

The family split almost down the middle on wanting to keep her on life support even though she was comatose and needing the machines to keep her blood clean enough to live.

Had she not been 89 years old, I do not doubt that this could have become a knock down drag-out fight between my family. As it is, the half that wanted her to be put onto life support have accused my mother's half as being greedy, wanting to take the non-existant money from her death that had already been sapped from paying for her to be cared for in full nursing for 6 years.

I don't think anyone should ever have to go through this kind of torture to be held to life by a machine.

Especially to note - I would rather that my body is thrown from the top of the empire state building than to be forced to keep alive artificially and especially before anyone ever use me as a political distraction and tool that they have of this poor woman who's own poorly made decision lead her to starve her brain and kill that area known as the central cortex, essentially making her like a computer with no CPU. It can technically boot up but it can't go anywhere.
