Another blatent abuse of supoena power (Schiavo case)
This is not a post of whether her feeding tube should be removed or not, this is another blatent abuse of supoena power!!!! My god, where is the outrage??? Do you want the government to be able to make this decision for you, or invade your privacy even more than they already do???????

I don't care whether you believe remove or keep the feeding tube, but I do care about the out of control Senate and House of Reps.

1. I Agree
I am uncomfortable with them passing laws for one person.

If they do pass this law that in absence of written instructions, we do everything to keep the person alive (not a bad law in my opinion) it should not be retroactive - it should only apply to people found brain dead after the law is passed. Had Terri known she would be the center of so much hub-bub she darn sure would have had a living will, not just discussed it with her husband.

Children caught in the middle
Friday, March 18, 2005

Protestors are on hand outside the hospice center.
Demonstrations outside the Pinellas Park hospice center where Terri Schiavo is staying are heating up and Cross Bayou Elementary School children are caught in the middle.

Principal Marcia Stone said Pinellas Park and campus police are forced to shut down 102nd Avenue at arrival and dismissal times to get the buses through.

"We have 18 school busses, sometimes more, that have to get through the traffic," Stone said. "We're the first of the three schools they have to go through and we want to make sure they're on schedule as much as possible."

She said they're also using busses to shuttle walkers and bike riders into and out of the school, dropping them off and picking them up two blocks away from the hospice center.

Another concern for the school and parents is making sure the children aren't upset by the signs and the protesting.

Campus police and Pinellas Park police will be stationed at the school all day.

Police are stationed on campus all day to make sure that happens.

3. So what now?
The woman obviously can't travel or testify. What are they going to do now? Are they going to take their hearing on the road to the hospice she's in? Who the hell is going to pay for that dog and pony show?

4. Absolutley. Where are the Conservatives, the States Righters, the Small G
The ones who claim to be against government interference with individual rights. Where's Bob BARR who has supposedly been standing for individual rights lately?

This is an out-of-control government, a DESPOTIC government.

5. Gee, I thought repubs were trying to give control back to the people
I thought they were trying to get the gvt out of people's lives and give the people back the control because they believe we know the best way to live our lives. Sarcasm. This is abuse of legalities. Mr.bush wants tort reform, wants to decrease frivilous lawsuits, look right here.

6. This is particularly disturbing problem
I have an expression, "tyranny of the plurality"
that is becoming applicable again. I noticed it probably in
the beginning with the whole Cuban embargo problem. A single,
albeit large, minority can have a disproportionate effect on
politics if their issue in effect has no "opposing"
side. In the case of Cuba, the immigrants placed this issue
well above other political considerations, yet anyone who
might be inclined to think otherwise, probably would not have
it placed anywhere near the top of their priorities. So the
minority "rules".

It can be said of almost any "single issue"
voters. But in the case of the Schiavo issue, it is easy for
all of these politicians to pander to this particular set of
right wing nuts, because how many of us really have this issue
high on our political agendas. It's a bit like the stem cell
research. People might have cared one way or another, but it
was not high on their list of priorities. So the pandering is
not only rampant, but excessive. And even if I try to elevate
the issue in some sense, what is the "pitch"?

This case brings up good valid points. If this poor woman
has any legacy, it's that a bunch of us may run out and write
this stuff down. It will do our loved ones as much good as
ourselves, as it may lift the burden of decisions they'll have
to make by knowing explicitly. However, there in lies the
rub. How do you fight what is happening to her, and build
some opposing consensus, without coming off looking like yer
out to kill people? What is the "Pro" position?
What does your rally look like? What does your flier say?

7. You Know What? I Hope They Wheel Her In
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 01:13 PM by Crisco
Seriously. There is nothing I'd like to do more than watch the looks on these sanctimonious assholes' faces when their bluff gets called. I'd like to see them try to continue the charade, as they fire off their questions to Terri.

I hope Micheal brings her in. I do.

9. 1-877-SOB-U-SOB
I'm going to just do a search on all of the Schiavo subpoena threads and start putting up the number.

It's toll free to US Capitol switchboard. Ask to be transferred to your Senator/Representative and tell them what you think. :)
