When The Revolution Comes, You'll Like Strawberries
1. Where did the battle cry come from? -- My grand father - a real leftie - used to use it (50 years ago), Groucho Marx used it, Jerry Seinfeld used it. But where did it come from.

2. Today's story: I have become so pissed off at Bush and Co. -- I was listening to Al Franken on the way to the Safeway. And he really go me going about Bush. And when I walked into the Safeway they were having a "Strawberry Special" - fresh strawberries, strawberry jam, strawberry short cake, strawberry yogurt -- all on special.

3. It was a conditioned reflex. I let out with the battle cry "When The Revolution Comes, You'll Like Strawberries" and put the strawberry specials into the cart!

If this still sounds unconvincing, we can help make our point with a well-known and venerable story. A communist was exhorting an audience of laborers: "Comes the Revolution, you'll eat strawberries and cream." One worker objected, "But I don't like strawberries and cream." The agitator glared at him. "Comes the Revolution, you'll like strawberries and cream!"

In "Ballyhoo of 1932" Willie delivered one of his best monologues, playing a revolutionary preaching from a soapbox: "Fellow workers, the time has arrived. Our cup of bitterness, it is filled to the brim! We must throw off the yoke of oppression....revolt! Revolt! Comes the revolution, ve'll eat strawberries and cream!" A heckler yells he doesn't like strawberries and cream. Willie: "You'll eat strawberries and cream and like it!"

Did I tell ever tell you about my latest insight into the Stalin question
by the way? Misha the Stalinist and Grisha the Trotskyist were discussing
the wonderful life they would live after the revolution.

"Comes the revolution," says Misha, "we'll eat strawberries and cream!"

"But I don't like strawberries and cream," said Grisha.

"Comes the revolution, you'll *have* to eat strawberries and cream!"

Grand pa raised me - and thoroughly indoctrinated me. I grew up thinking "Solidarity Forever" was the last verse of the "Star Spangled Banner."

The Strawberry Statement--so it wasn't as enigmatic as we all thought.

It's from Dean Deane (yes) at Columbia University, 1967: "A university is definitely not a democratic institution. When decisions begin to be made democratically around here, I will not be here any longer. Whether students vote yes or no on an issue is like telling me they like strawberries."

Quote later the title of a book, and finally dribbled off the stage of world events as a movie
