Bush plans to attack/force coup in Venezuela against Chavez?
Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's left-leaning leader, became furious at the Bushies after the failed coup against him a couple years ago (admittedly w/ pretty good reason). He's been planning to shift a good portion of his oil sales to China. I've come across some utterings lately about "enforcing the Monroe Doctrine" and all that w.r.t. Venezuela (Read: Making sure Chavez has an unfortunate "accident" on the way to a speech, or paying some mercenary army to invade the country.)

Some guy recently published an article explicitly justifying such a stance: http://www.therealitycheck.org/GuestColumnist/ayoshida030505.htm

I'd thought this article was initially tongue-in-cheek, but this Adam Yoshida guy is apparently dead serious. Anyone in the know on affairs like these (e.g. working in the diplomatic corps, browsing S. American media)-- is there really something afoot here? Although I'm sure that some of the chickenhawks in the Administration might be overjoyed to see Chavez suffer a "premature conclusion" to his Presidential term, I've doubted that there's realistically any interest in deposing Chavez, let alone taking military action vs. Venezuela, since the US would be immediately suspected no matter what and loathed even more than we currently are by the rest of the world. But maybe I'm not being cynical enough.

1. Adam Yoshida is a nutbar
I don't even think that WorldNutDaily or NewsMax will run his stuff.
I think he's Canadian (sorry about that) but he's so pro-* and military solutions to EVERYTHING he makes a fool of himself.

3. Whoa-- you're right. But still seems that many Rethugs agree on Chavez

The guy actually wrote in complete, lucid sentences w/ logical flow in his article, which distracted me from the fact that Yoshida (based on his blog) is off the charts on the bats**t meter.

And he's Canadian? Brrr... my condolences, Canadian friend. I guess every society has bizarre outliers. Yoshida sounds like a self-hating 2nd-generation immigrant sort spending his days typing w/ one hand on the computer in mama's basement, so he feels more powerful by sucking up to Bush and neocon militarism and advocating extreme violence by the US against those inferior non-Anglo Saxon brown people who dare to get uppity and speak for themselves.

What's sad is there are apparently millions of Americans who agree with Yoshida's fantasies on this. On Instapundit, Freep, LGF and other blogs, they've whipped themselves into Chavez-hating frenzies on more than one occasion, and there's enough buzz and slander there that it wouldn't be too difficult to drum up some excuse for declaring Chavez "anti-democratic" and taking action against him and/or Venezuela. As we now know, this madness is no longer idle talk.

2. It's coming, but Iran or Syria comes first....

until they are able to handle two coups at the same time.

They will probably have to have a boots down in either area. And, I imagine they might be considering taking Cuba simultaneously with V.

They have so many decisions.

Should they let Israel take Iran?
If yes, that means more U.S. soldiers for Venezuela.
How do they get Halliburton in there fast - how soon can Halliburton run with things.
Can they protect the ports in Venezuela?
Should they ask El Salvador and Nicarauga or Brazil to join their co-alition against Venezuela?

Yes...they have sooooo many decisions.

4. I wouldn't be surprised at the desire to do so, but we're overextended
in Iraq. And of course, Iran and Syria have already been mentioned. Chavez is making deals with China and has purged the nationalized petroleum country of pro-American execs.

7. THere is a China/US war going on, and we've already lost it
Ninja troopers building WalMarts all over the US, cash desperate agencies selling securities to Chinese interests and IBM selling its PC division to China as well?

Who is the superpower? The guy with all the guns, or the guy who owns that guy?

How hard is THAT to figure out?

8. They've already tried a coup two or three times now, getting a bit obvious
If Chavez keeps playing it smart by being very vocal and very public, they may have their hands tied.
