1. NO!
She is no longer living. I feel awful that the parents have to go through this but NO! Let her die with dignity!

2. I wonder how many of that 38% of morons out there
realize what "put the tube back" really means?

The procedure involves a gastroscope through her mouth and down her esophagus and a new stab wound into her stomach. The gastroscope is used to confirm placement of the tube into the stomach. A balloon in the end of the tube is inflated to keep it in place and the gastroscope is withdrawn. Typically at least 24 hours have to pass before the tube is used.

Because she is awake (although not responsive) she will be anesthetized for the procedure, and anesthesia carries its own set of risks.

Risks for the insertion of a feeding tube are injury to adjacent organs, hemorrhage, and infection.

This is what 38% of the people in the country want for this unfortunate person.

Never mind the courts, acting on her behalf, have determined she would not want it for herself.

5. On Fri I heard that the feeding tube wasn't actually removed, but
closed off. I think it was Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN. He showed an actual feeding tube, and said that they didn't actually remove it, but closed off the access at the top of the tube. I have no idea if this is true or not, but Sanjay usually is a pretty straight shooter with his info.

8. They announced the tube was pulled out
that it went well, and that she showed no sign of discomfort.

I'll believe the facility spokesmen, the lawyer who was present, and other people who were there before I'll believe a doc, no matter how well intentioned, who wasn't.

13. No offense but you are choosing to believe folks whose training is to spin
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 10:58 PM by w4rma
PR in their favor over folks (doctors) whose training is to give the straight facts as they understand them and nothing more.

You'd be wise to trust the doctor over any lawyer or PR guy for the hospital.

6. Well, if one of their 'leaders' brought her bread and water....not much
I would hazard to guess. It's not the issue anyway, it's just to be anti-'liberal'

4. I heard earlier on some TV show that the judge would be chosen randomly
via some computer program I think. I think it was something on CNN.

9. Voted
and wrote this opinion.

It's sad what politicians will apparently do for political gain. This case has been in the courts for years and the US Supreme Court declined their opportunity to intervene. Unfortunately, the "talking points" that have come to light show the political gamesmanship involved. Of course they can deny it but it stinks to high heaven.

10. Have any here watched the videos of Terri?
I thought she was a vegetable from watching the MSM, until I saw a video of her at a friend's house. She responds to others, a vegetable does not do that.

There are others in this country that are being kept alive that are vegetables. They should be allowed to go if it is meant to be.

I believe in the right to end suffering, she does not look as if she is suffering. And she looked fairly alert. I was very surprised, for years I believed her family were holding on to a shell, going by what is shown on MSM. I now believe I was wrong to think so.

Anyone remember Karen Ann Quinlan? She was brain dead and it took 17 years, I think, before they finally agreed to pull the plug as her family asked. Her birthday is the 25th. Rest in Peace Karen.

Of course, the Lunatic will jump on this to further his polling power. What a nice man, to use disabled people for his own gain.

12. The only videos I've seen are from 2001
I didn't think there were any later ones, so not sure what you saw. She has reflexes -- clap your hands near her ear, for example, and she will react.

15. She does not respond to anyone or anything.
That video you watched is highly edited, down to a few seconds from hours of (illegally obtained, btw) tape.

And you're right - she isn't suffering, because she can't feel anything, she has no emotions, she doesn't know what's going on around her. That doesn't mean her body should be kept alive. Her brain has liquified. Do you know what that means? There is no hope for her recovery, she will never again feel anything, see anything, hear anything, she has no memories, no thought process (a flat EEG).
