The Repubs have got to know how unpopular the

1. They're going to stick her feeding tube back in then a terrorist
will attack her hospice and they will pass a new improved patriot act after an agent for Bin Laden (tm) kills Terri...and Tom Clancy will write a book about it and Mel Gibson will star in the movie.

Hey! It can happen. Anything is possible. This is America.

2. Honestly? I think they don't care.
Idiot Americans put them in power, and now they have unrestrained rule over every branch of government. As we've seen tonight, even checks and balances don't apply anymore.

As election time draws closer, they'll slide to the middle, they'll be elected yet again by the oblivious public (the public who so heavily disapproves of *'s actions, yet continues to vote for him and his party), and the cycle will continue.

3. It's popular with their fundie base
and that's all that matters to the GOP nowadays.

8. I agree
From what I've been reading here this morning is that a lot of the real republicans are upset over this. The fundies are praising Bush like he's God reincarnated.

5. That's the whole point
They do horrible unpopular things and get away with it to convince the citizenry that it's futile to defy them.

7. It's all about the fundies

They have nothing else to give them. Nothing on abortion, nothing much on gay marriage, nowhere to go on creationism or school prayer or homeschooling. The money will keep on coming, of course. So there's some serious wavering and depression going on in the fundie/theocratic camp, with 'family values' going bust and socioeconomic decline going on and Savior George of Midland not being able to provide anything for true believers to glom onto for Christian Nation vanities.

This fairly complicated story with a woman who is or isn't entirely brain dead is just the right thing- the people being appealed to only see George And Bill And Tom The Good Republicans fighting against the inhuman machines and penny-pinching managers and finicky judges. The point is not that Terri Schiavo will somehow rise off her bed and walk again, it's that someone will hold her hand and ask her whether she 'believes in God' and she will say 'yes' before she dies. Her body has to be kept alive in order to try to 'save' her soul.

It's all just a lumping of incoherent, bad, materialist/spiritual theology that is being catered to, as a bottom line. But to admit that it's all crap is to betray the whole structure of bad theology, falsely assumed authority, magical beliefs, paganist accretions, improper interpretations of the Bible, and occultic willpower-and-death-centeredness of the contemporary Christian Right. Of course, the language is Orwellian, it's all 'pro-life'...for a group of people that is mesmerized with its own increasing irrelevance and misplaced selfimportance and historical obsolescence, enough so to engage in Rapture cultism and End Times desires.

9. They threw a bone to the anti-abortions people who were told
he wasn't going to do anything for them and then called in a visit to a March in Washington. They were bewildered and beginning to wonder if they had been had.

This is a bone. Terry doesn't cost Bush much at all and he gets to reconnect with people whose votes he took and then planned not to do anything about their issues because..they were only useful so long as the issues were not solved.

That is what he wins. He gives them a little win that doesn't really cost him anything (just like instilling patriotism doesn't actually cost him anything in terms of increases taxes for his elites).

Boy I hope the deliriously happy do not wake up tomorrow and say: "that Terry bill could just have easily been one on abortion (since Bush controls all government)and making it something the Judiciary would then have to rule on".
