So, which Democrats signed the Schiavo bill?
Is there a list somewhere of the Democrats that thought this was a good idea? I've been looking and so far I've only found one reference to the 47 Democratic House members. But no names. I need names. Time to send off some fiery emails to my elected Senators and Representatives.

4. There is a photo of Delay with our guy Harkin in the background
floating around. There is talk that he supported this because of his work with disabled Americans. Unfortunately, he's been used by the repugs on this one.

7. Washington Post reports only 3 Senators present for "unanimous consent"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A53153-2005Mar21.html

The Senate, operating under unanimous-consent rules, passed the legislation yesterday afternoon with no debate and with only three members present. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), a renowned heart surgeon, said Congress cannot force a U.S. judge to order that Schiavo's feeding tube be reinserted while the new federal case goes forward. However, he said, "I would expect that a federal judge would grant a stay under these circumstances, because Terri would need to live in order for the court to consider the case."

___________________

It would have taken only one Senator to block this unanimous consent request. How sad no Senator was willing to stand up for this Congressional usurpation of the separation of powers. Can perhaps the federal court refuse to take jurisdiction of this case?

17. Which three senators were there?
Frist, I know.

I've heard Harkin. Is that right? Who else? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I am really disappointed in the Senate. Even Dayton or Sarbanes could have stood up and blocked it. They aren't running for re-election. They have nothing to lose.

Patrick Kennedy voted against it in the House, and all that I've heard from Ted Kennedy is that he'll work to make sure that our rights are not impeded...or something like that. Where the hell was he.

2. Is it too much to hope for that I smell the beginnings of a ground swell
against our "holier than thou" lawmakers?

Gee, I sure would like to see a list of those folks, adults and children, who were left on the side of the road to die, while their insurance companies diddled and denied them their....

tests
transplants
medical procedures
medicines from other countries
etc, etc, etc, etc, etc....................

And the Congress never intervened on their behalf.

9. Does not voting mean they were present and deliberately
decided not to vote on this issue or they missed the vote?

I know they called people back to DC but some might have decided not to even bother to go back

11. That's exactly the point
The Repukes can get their ass there to stomp all over the Constitution, marital sanctity, civil rights, etc, but the Dems couldn't be bothered to go and defend them.

19. So what is it about these Dems?
Do they just not realize that this is 1) overstepping their bounds and 2) pointless, because Terri HAS NO CEREBRAL CORTEX?

Do they just not know that fact, or not care? Is this a case of ignorance, or depraved indifference?

16. And that, friends, is why Dems are perceived as not standing for anything!
> Joe Baca (CA)
> Byron Baird (WA)
> John Barrow (GA)
:
> Bart Stupak (Mich.)
> John Tanner (TN)
> Albert Wynn (MD)

And that, friends, is why Dems are perceived as not standing for
anything! Because they stand for "Cover my ass!" first, before
all other ethical demands upon their vote.

Given that they vote with Republicans, it's not hard to understand
why people vote for the REAL he-man, SUV-driving, war-declaring,
our-oil-under-their-sand-taking, life-saving* Republicans rather
than the Democrats.

Maybe some day we'll clearly stand for something again.
