2. The phrase I read
and which raised the hairs on my neck, suggested a voice vote was taken in a "nearly empty chamber".

Later, when I heard DeLay suggest the Senate had passed it unanimously, I nearly hurled.

10. The scandal multiplies.
I don't know who to be more disappointed in. I expect this kind of maneuver from the pubs but it seems Dems were complicit. At least some Dems in the House had the intestinal fortitude to vote on the record.

Three Senators? Sad...

5. There were only 3 Senators present
Santorum, Frist and Harkin.

They had a voice vote and it passed by unanimous consent. Harkin (D-IA) didn't request a quorum call.

The next order of business will apparently be appointing Bush's horse to the Senate.

6. I found this
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/orl-asecmschiavo21032105mar21,0,2376643.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines

With Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., presiding, the compromise Schiavo bill passed on a voice vote in a chamber empty of senators save for Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and John Warner, R-Va.

This is sad.

8. Harkins statement
Harkin has this statement on his website. In fairness to him, disability issues have been one of his personal issues in the Senate.

STATEMENT OF SENATOR TOM HARKIN (D-IA) ON THE CASE OF TERRI SCHIAVO

FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2005
March 18, 2005

“I have long been an advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. Many in that community are keenly aware of the risk of incapacitation. In such cases, I believe that every precaution should be taken to learn and respect their desires regarding the removal of life supports.

“Over the last week, I have been working hard, and in good faith with Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL), Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), and others to come up with legislation that would allow federal review of the Terri Schiavo case. Yesterday afternoon, we came up with bipartisan measure that did just that and many of my Senate Republican and Democratic colleagues deserve praise for their hard and swift work.

“Unfortunately, the House Republican Leadership refused to take up the bill before sending members home for a two week vacation. There is no excuse for stalling a matter of such an urgent and life threatening nature. They are solely responsible for the consequences Ms. Schiavo and her family now face, as well as for today’s unfortunate events. Congressional action is this area should be based on respect for the wishes and dignity of those who are incapacitated.

“It is my belief that people with disabilities and those who are incapacitated deserve the utmost dignity and respect. I plan to continue to work with my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle to give cases like this an opportunity for further review in federal courts.”

9. I think the issue is, she's not disabled -- she's dead
Doctors say so. Courts say so. Her husband says so.

She's been dead for years -- not 'disabled'.

Harkin is being deceitful framing the issue as a 'disability rights' issue.

The Senate met with just three senators — Frist, Harkin and Rick Santorum, R-Pa., — on the floor, surrounded by two dozen pages, clerks and parliamentarians. Lawmakers were scattered around the world on trips at the start of the Easter break. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called from Jerusalem at 4 a.m. Eastern time to participate in negotiations. Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., also returned to the Capitol.

The Senate session was a technical matter, to adjourn so that the House could act before today, when a session was scheduled.

The vote was verbal and unrecorded. You will not find a record of it on the senate's site.
