7. I don't even try to keep up anymore.
There is so much violence all around us now that one becomes numb. I'm in GA so we just had the whole trauma of the courthouse shooting. The suspect was in the town where my stepdaughter lives when he surrendered.

6. Red Lake Indian Reservation
One of the biggest in Minnesota. Also one of the poorest areas of our state, too, unfortunately.

My dad's family is from the area just south of the Res, right near the source of the Mississippi River. There's not a whole lot up there-- just lots of wilderness and poverty. There's little work, little to do besides drink and fight, and almost no opportunity.

My dad got the hell out of there when he was 15, and never went back.

13. My dad represented the Red Lake Indians
in tax matters.I went up there with him on one of his trips and was floored at the poverty/living conditions up there.Alcoholism is rampant according to what my dad told me.

Not the land of the free for them.

A brief overview of Red Lake

The Red Lake Indian Reservation is located in the northern Minnesota counties of Beltrami and Clearwater, approximately 30 miles north of Bemidji. There are four districts within the reservation which include Red Lake, Redby, Ponemah and Little Rock. Tribal headquarters is located in Red Lake.
