1. I think Dean would even admit it wasn't his finest moment
but this thing has been beaten to death, so much so that a backlash of some kind wouldn't surprise me.

23. He should have NEVER apologized for that speech
Edited on Fri Jan-23-04 12:37 AM by maggrwaggr
As far as I'm concerned, this is the first big mistake I've seen Dean make -- that is, apologize for his speech.

Big boo-boo. It's the one time I've been disappointed in him. His attitude should have been "fuck you" (only nicer of course).

He should NEVER apologize in a situation like that.

24. Weren't you listening - he didn't apologize
He (and his wife) admitted that it sounded a little goofy, but he said that it was just the way he was, and he didn't care if it wasn't "presidential". He made no apologies for his speech, and he pointed out that he was trying to lift the spirits of his disappointed supporters.

it's so predictable; the media overreacts all the time.

25. And they overreact IN UNISON
how can this escape anyone anymore? The media is a single voice, representing a very wealthy and corrupt few!

3. Turned Dean for me
I've been immune to Dean's charms for the whole campaign so far ... but the more I see of this speech the more I like the guy. The ridicule has been SO overboard for someone who obviously has some passion for living and leadership. Still not my first choice but I get the guy now.

7. can you believe folks kept saying Rove wanted to face Dean?
I'm glad you're looking at him anew. I swear to God, Rove fears this man.

16. I swear to god Rove is crapping himself daily because
on that stage represents 8 people who can all eat George's lunch.

Who does Rove want to go up against? Hillary or Gore. They've already written those attack scripts. Our current crop keep throwing curve balls, to Bush and to the media.

8. It IS turning.
I went out for coffee today and the one thing I kept hearing over and over was 'you know, I saw it and it wasn't that bad". Dr. Dean may benefit from media overkill.

How strange it gets.

9. He sucked the air out of all media
Not only the usual suspects like "news" shows, but comedy TV, morning radio shows, the web, and on and on.

100 times the coverage of Bushs* speech.

Like his speech or not, it took over the airwaves.

10. I just do not know what all the fuss........
is about. He's smiling the whole time he's talkin'. So what? He's passionate, tired, and hurt, I would imagine. His emotions got the best of him for 10 seconds. Whoopdeedoo. I still love him and I'll say it again, this race would have been totally boring without him. The press would not be covering it like they are if not for him. We would be forced to watch Joyless-Joe, sad-sack Kerry, and Edwards is OK. But BORING nonetheless!

13. I admit I laughed..
My husband received an email with a video clip of Dean, set to music, and he was clutching a small, defenseless kitten. I laughed my ass off at it. I am one of the staunchest Dean supporters.. I did the flash mob at the Space Needle for him, donated, plan to caucus for him. I just thought it was really funny when I saw the clip and the kitten. It was like a perfect satire on what the media was alledging about him. He is laughing about it himself. I saw clip of his interview with Diane Sawyer (god, she's had a lot of plastic surgery in the years since I saw her on t.v.! Yikes!). She asked if he thought he was acting "presidential" during his speech that night. He said, 'of course not. When my son plays hockey and does something awesome, I jump up and screech. That's not presidential, but it's human and it's part of being a Dad, and I"ll continue to be both'. I'm paraphrasing, obviously. Wonderful answer. She also accused him of using his wife as "prop" by having her show up the night before the caucuses (that was an inance accusation), and by having her at the interview. Judy Dean quelled that one nicely. She's very nice and normal.. not a stepford wife.

This whole speech thing will die down. I think it was a great way to get him noticed, for better or worse!! Lots of people still don't know who he is. Can't wait for the Letterman show. But.. when the hell is he going to be on the Daily Show????

17. The media may have overplayed its hand
I have right wing friends who are extending sympathy to me because they wanted to see Dean lose based on his positions, not in some BS gotcha attempt. This might cause people to get to know his positions. Who knows?

Someone'll do it...they may as well make some money off of it.

Although, on the other hand, I think the moment may have passed, as of now. Which is just as well...

26. It's amazing
how much can change in a few days. Monday night and Tuesday I felt nothing but hopeless despair. Even though I wouldn't admit it to anyone, I thought he was toast. I thought the media would never let him live Monday night down.

But their constant 24-hour analysis of his "screech" is going to totally bite them in the ass. The more it's played, the more he gets noticed, and the more people are saying, "Hey, what's the big deal?"

I feel just as confident as ever that he is going to pull through this one. The tide is definitely turning :)
