"A coalition of liberal civil-rights advocates, conservative libertarians, gun-rights supporters and medical privacy advocates have joined forces to call on the government to overturn portions of the Patriot Act. Former Republican Congressman Bob Barr said that keeping the law intact would do "great and irreparable harm" to the Constitution. The group -- the Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances -- aims to overturn provisions of the law that allow government agents to carry out secret searches and to demand records from libraries, bookstores and medical offices."

It has been discussed and and in my view mostly rejected here on DU, but it has happened: liberals and conservatives have joined forces.
Differences in points of view between (most) liberals and (most, or at least some) conservatives are small when compared to the differences between either liberals or conservatives and this neocon government. That doesn't mean we should all agree on everything or that liberals should move to the right, nor that repubs should move to the left. It just means we need to agree to disagree with the neocons.
If liberal-republican grassroots groups arise to oppose this government, then maybe the Dem party could win by a landslide by going on a civil rights platform.
