Lies and deception. We're too slow.
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 09:05 AM by rpannier
In 1989, while I was in college I had the dubious honor of sharing a class with a man who claimed to be a nephew of Richard Viguerie (the man who helped sell Reagan to Americans through direct mail advertising) Whether he is/was his nephew is of little importance, what he said was. According to him
His uncle and several other advisor's (Rollins and Buchanan were two of them) came up with a plan to offset any negative press about Reagan. Anytime a news story began coming to light that seemed outrageous, but was true, they'd float two or three stories that were equally outrageous but lies.
As these lies circulated, the true story would get lumped in with the false stories and most people wouldn't believe any of the stories because the public saw them all as lies.
I believe they DID do this and I believe the Republicans do it to this day. This is why I think it's hard to get people to act on the outrageous things that this administration does.

1. This is what criminal defense attorneys do to juries
all the time. It's standard operating procedure. Good prosecutors knock down the BS arguments and attempt to keep the jury focused on the behavior of the defendant, rather than the victim. It's a tough fight but winable obviously. Makes one wonder where are the "prosecutors" from the dem party? Or, has the media made this fight so unfair that it's unwinable?

I guarantee this. If high-ranking dems were "calling a spade a spade" and telling the press that the repubes are lying to them and the American people(specifically using the word "lying") the press would pay attention.

2. I hear you but don't forget that 'Tephlon Don' (Gotti) had the no-stick..
gimmick also..With time and effort the truth came out..(Also remember Gotti's claim of charisma and attractiveness..much like the Gip-Chuck-up claim of 'great communicator')..As Lincoln said "Let the people know the facts and the nation will be free"..It's getting at these facts and cutting through all the r w distortive crap that makes arriving at the truth all too challenging..
