Congress measured on Schiavo after poll

Friday, March 25, 2005
By Richard Simon And Janet Hook, Los Angeles Times

WASHINGTON -- After Congress' high-profile entry into the Terri Schiavo case, most lawmakers responded in a low-key manner to yesterday's Supreme Court decision not to intervene in the dispute, underscoring the delicate political nature of the controversy.

The measured reactions came as polls have shown public disapproval of Washington's actions in the matter.

The terse statements from Capitol Hill regarding the Supreme Court's decision contrasted with the spate of news conferences a week ago, when several lawmakers began pushing legislation to allow federal courts to review the Schiavo case.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who spearheaded that drive, issued a joint statement with House Judiciary Committee Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., R-Wis., expressing "profound sadness and disappointment" with the court decision. But they suggested that there was nothing else that Congress could do in the Schiavo case.

3. They so overplayed their hand on this.
I only hope that the American people remember this less than 18 months from now.

But thanks to the "corporate media", it will be a non-entity.

5. The Repups are counting on amnesia--in fact some "reporter' last
evening (? cnn) was saying that 2006 was a long way away and does not expect much political fallout. He was setting up the scene alrealy.

17. Even Scarier is
When this poor woman does die, the corporate media won't make it a "non-entity". It will slowly be turned to something that a "majority" of Americans agree with.

Mark my words. By the time the corporate media is done making a martyr out of her, they'll be running around with Schiavo Ribbons on all of their lapels. Not to mention the nifty feeding tube bracelets they will be passing out at the Republican Convention.

I wish I had more faith in the American people, but with the media beating this into our brains with nothing but right-wing talking points 24/7 public opinion can be turned. That's why Kerry should have come out with guns blazing before the over-dubb music in the Swift liars ad had even faded.

18. Folks will remember 18 months from now, but only . . .
If we keep reminding them. The fact that it's now safe to stand between Tom Delay and a camera is proof enough that the Repressive Right knows it's overplayed this hand.

EVERY TIME some Republican talks about oppressive government intervention, talk about Terri Schiavo.

EVERY TIME some Republican talks about fiscal responsibility, talk about the record budget deficits.

EVERY TIME some Republican talks about a strong national defense, talk about sagging recruiting numbers.

EVERY TIME some Republican talks about supporting the troops, talk about VA cuts.

EVERY TIME.

never mind the fucking damage they've caused across America with their grandstanding .....the attacks on the judiciary not being the least

it's the measure of their true character that they are slinking away after attacking the Shiavo family and the rest of America with their ignorance (Delay's a coward, nothing but)...and I'm glad they're going away...but by gawds ,I'm livid they subjected America to their ignorance to begin with...

They helped to create that mess in Florida by sticking their noses into it...got burned at the polls and are now running for cover...

14. Prepare for erasure
Soon the GOP will not even know who Terri Sciavo is.

"Terri who? I don't know enough about the situation to comment, I direct your questions to uh, to her lawyers or family or something. Look over there, it's Elvis!"

16. We need one or two high profile Dems to
pound them on this issue. Keep it in the spotlight, keep forcing their hand and make them make comments as to defend why they did what they did.
