This is a very curious item. On the surface, it is a juicy tidbit more suited to the pages of the National Inquirer than GNN. Of course there is the delicious paradox of Wolfowitz being romantically involved with a Muslim woman, even as he authorizes and rationalizes the deaths of tens of thousands of other Muslims. The real issue, however, is that the woman in question, Shaha Ali Riza, is the acting manager for External Relations and Outreach for the Middle East at the World Bank. This raises obvious conflict of interest questions with Wolfowitz’s recent nomination for the position of president of the World Bank.

WASHINGTON, 23 March 2005 — Here’s a bit of news that had Washingtonians choking on their coffee this morning: President Bush’s neoconservative hawk Paul Wolfowitz, the Pentagon’s architect of the US invasion of Iraq, is dating a Muslim!

While battle lines have hardened over President Bush’s nomination of Wolfowitz to become president of the World Bank, what many say is really fueling the controversy is concern within the bank over Wolfowitz’s reported romantic relationship with Shaha Ali Riza, an Arab feminist who is the acting manager for External Relations and Outreach for the Middle East and North Africa Region at the World Bank.

reportedly no record of the divorce, and an associate refers to a legal seperation. Personally that shouldn't be a deal-breaker - but the conflict of interest should. Will they try to erect a "chinese wall" (eg decision making seperation to avoid conflict of interest - those things are amazingly leaky, however. esp when one has the ethics of a dog to begin with.)

Stories about their little relationship surfaced months ago, anyway.

anything that might throw off this appointment - is worth talking about. Probably nothing will stop it - but if it causes a little discomfort along the way (with even the hope of derailment) - all for the good - let the gossiping begin!

According to the article, Wolfowitz wants an immediate war with Iraq, believing that the targeting of Afghanistan, an already impoverished wasteland, falls far short of the global war the cabalists are seeking. Correct me if I'm wrong, but according to Islamic law, a Muslim man may marry a non-Muslim woman, but a Muslim woman may not marry a non-Muslim man unless he first converts to Islam. I'm not sure how a non-marital relationship fits into the picture.

Muslim women can marry anyone within the three major religions - Islam, Christianity and even Judism.
But, in their culture, it's already a big no-no to be having sex out of wedlock, not to mention with a married man!
