1. Oh, stop it.
There are no angels or devils in this little drama.

There are people clinging to false hope and people who have finally come to terms with reality. That's all.

The only villains in all this are the religious shit stirrers and the politicians.

Everybody else is human and doing what they think is right.

2. no, I don't think so
read the paper and decide for yourself.

in 89 the parents filed for bankruptcy

in the early 90's Michael S got the settlement and on Valentines day MR schindler in Terri's room started the fight over money.

that family is sick and pathetic

no wonder Terri had eating disorders.

4. God Bless You......
Having empathy for people in distress is what makes me a liberal...

A person would have to be irredeemably evil to be beyond the reach of my empathy....

12. You are correct
There is nothing to be gained by villainizing anyone.

I for one never believe any person involved in a tragedy like this is wholly good or wholly evil and in fact, I think it weakens the facts of the case to attack one party or the other.

The facts are simple and decisions can be based purely on those, no matter what the motives are.

18. a little usa today snippit
On Valentine's Day that year, he testified, he was in his wife's nursing home room studying. He wanted to become a nurse so he could care for his wife himself. He had taken Terri to California for experimental treatment. A doctor there had placed a stimulator inside Terri's brain and those of other people in vegetative states to try to stimulate still-living but dormant cells.

According to Schiavo's testimony, the Schindlers came into Terri's room in the nursing home, spoke to their daughter, then turned to him.

"The first words out of my father-in-law's mouth was how much money he was going to get," Schiavo said. "I was, 'What do you mean?' 'Well, you owe me money.' "

Schiavo said he told his in-laws that all the money had gone to his wife — a lie he said he told Bob Schindler "to shut him up because he was screaming."

Schiavo said his father-in-law called him "a few choice words," then stormed out of the room. Schiavo said he started to follow him, but his mother-in-law stepped in front of him, saying, "This is my daughter, our daughter, and we deserve some of this money."

3. I heard they had to file bankruptcy several years ago.
It was part of some of the babble on CNN a few days ago. I guess they had been a fairly wealthy family, and something happened that they had to file for bankruptcy. Report didn't say why. I guess it was around the time of the malpractice settlement, and their relationship with Michael split when he wouldn't share part of the $300,000 he received as his portion of the settlement.

Now, I suspect it's more about politics and pay back to Michael for pissing them off.

5. They love their daughter. I don't begrudge them for ..
grasping at any straw they feel they have to take (within the judicial process) since they are driven by emotion. I DO begrudge those who are not emotionally involved for believing and supporting obviously false or deficient "evidence".

9. I know other families
that have been in a struggle over if/when to "pull the plug" - dramas not lasting 15 years or involving politicians... but lasting quite a while - with emotional ties and good intentions. In the emotional tug of war - this family is not unique and neither side nec. has bad intentions.

I do have great resentment for those using this for political and finanacial gain. Those seeking contributions. Those trying to pump up ratings and thus ad dollar rates. Those exploiting the situation and manipulating the emotions of others over a very tragic (and should be personal) situation.

6. IMO - they are classic "control freaks"
They have to be in control - even though she was married for several years - they still demanded control over her. It's like she's their little "pet."

Most kids who end up with eating disorders have controlling parents and the children feel as if eating/dieting is the only thing they can control.

10. This is exploitation, pure and simple
"she would hate all of this"

I agree 100%. It's obvious that she had significant self-image issues prior to being in the state she is in now. If she had the ability to be aware of her situation, I'm sure she would be appalled. The fact that her vegetative photos and videos are on display for the world would probably be absolutely devastating to her. The only saving grace is that she has no clue about what is happening to her. That part of her died years ago.

13. Could it be, that they are clinging to the circus out of desparation?
I don't agree with what they are doing. I fear for the aftermath ... esp the potential actions of some of the very frenzied folks who have been worked up into a frothy hatred over this.

However, I do think it is possible that they love her and believe that this is the only recourse. I am not ready to impute intentions upon them.

Though I will impute intentions on many who are exploiting this situation (politicians, media, leaders using this for fundraising (nyt article today).)

15. Disagree
that one necessarily equals two. They didn't agree with him that efforts to sustain her life should end, did they? If so I take back what I am about to say.

Agreeing that she is in a vegistative state, doesn't nec mean they do not believe that "she is there" - or "that miracles can happen" per those in vegitative states. That, in short, is what they seem to be desperately clinging to. I don't agree. I would hate to be kept in this condition. I even agree that given her battle with bulimia that it is unlikely that she would want to be in this condition nor would want her pictures broadcast across the world. However, that doesn't make me believe that these folks are just "in it for hte money". I have known folks, as I wrote above, in similar familial struggles at an end of life situation. No money involved. Just lots of desparation. Granted in my eye - it is desparation steeped in self-centeredness in the sense it is the fully living that doesn't want to let go... but, I still am not ready to impute malintent.

However - I heartily heap tons of malintent on the many who have been working hard to exploit the situation (politicians, media, religious right fundraisers, etc.) And I fear that a violent backlash from a frenzied up "follower" is likely in the making. ALL of this is unavoidable. But I still seperate it out from what I view as desperation of the parents/sibs.

23. Yes, you're right.
And anyone who would side up with the likes of Randall Terry and George Mellon Scaife is stooping pretty low.

I can tell you that I'm a fairly normal woman and I was anorexic in my teens and early 20s, so I can relate, a bit, to Ms. Schiavo. And I can also tell you that if my family ever broadcast pictures of me in that sad medical state I would haunt them forever. The invasion of her privacy is the worst thing, to me.

22. Please prove this comment...
It is extremely innaccurate. Its the stereotypical given out type of an anorexic. Anorexia knows no bounds of types or parents. Bulimia is even more rampant. So tell us how horrid these parents had to be to this bulimic daughter. And back it up with FACTS.

You are absolutely right. The previous posters assertions about anorexia are uninformed and close to downright stupid. One thing I hate about internet boards: know-nothing posters making laughable assertions without eveidence. Good on you for calling that poster out.

26. Thank you.
That and the fact that many posters link bulimia with not wanting your picture broadcast. Little do they know that a large percentage of women whom they gaze on in photos are bulimic and anorexic. Obviously they do not care if their picture is broadcast to the world. I can only conclude that the posters deem that their "beauty" is not something they want to see.

But you are right about these internet posters who know nothing of an eating disorder but talk as if they do. Hope they never have a loved one or themselves go through it.

17. When TS has served her purpose, the Religious Rightwingnuts will
drop the Schindlers like a hot potato(e).

If they think that they can get any more money out of the churches, they'll be wrong.

Of course, Regnery is going to publish their books, but do you really get much money when your book is purchased in bulk and then remaindered?

20. I think you have a point. The sequence of events gives one pause..
I won't "vilify" the parents, but I do take note that money may have played a part in this sad drama. Something is driving this family, but when the Schindlers latched on to the rabid "prolife" groups and their attorneys there was no turning back. It took on a life of its' own and became a despicable circus.

25. I heard Michael say on a television interview
that Terri's father stopped talking to him when he told him there was no money for him. The interviewer said "Have you talked to Terri's father?" Michael said "no". The interviewer then asked Michael when he last talked to Terri's father. I can't remember the exact words, but he did say that when the father asked for money and Michael said No, they had words and have not spoken since. Remember, money is the root of all evil.

28. Read what Judge Greer had to say about the money:
Note that Judge Greer, in his 2000 order, made a special point of dicussing the money/schindler/schiavo split.

See the bottom of page 2 of the 2000 court order

http://abstractappeal.com/schiavo/trialctorder02-00.pdf

It's not complimentary to the Schindlers, at all. In fact, it explains why the Schindlers have tried so hard to get Greer removed: he saw through their BS.

Judges tend to be circumspect in their opinions...this is a bombshell. He says the split happened after the Schindlers dd not get their money. Smart Judge.
