Disgraceful DeLay

Politician twists Schiavo case for own ends

March 25, 2005

Congressional Democrats probably would love to divide the GOP, undermine the conservative agenda, and turn Americans against the Republican majority. But, frankly, they don't have that kind of power. A job that big calls for the handiwork of Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

Looking back on Congress' handling of the Terri Schiavo controversy – which included passing an emergency bill aimed at prolonging Schiavo's life – it's hard to decide which of DeLay's comments was more offensive.

Was it when DeLay referred to Michael Schiavo's lawyer as "the embodiment of evil"? Or when he accused those who disagreed with him of being "so barbaric as to pull a feeding tube out of a person that is lucid and starve them to death for two weeks"?

No, what took the prize was what DeLay said when he let his guard down at what he obviously thought was a private meeting of like-minded social conservatives. After insisting that Congress' intervention in the Schiavo case had nothing to do with politics, DeLay used the issue to rally the faithful at a meeting of the Family Research Council. DeLay went so far as to describe the anguishing plight of this 41-year-old woman as a gift from God and a boost to the cause of Christian conservatives.

1. Like I said before, their overconfidence will destroy them!
All the extreme RW believed that the mojority of Americans felt as they do. Hell, I can't blame them, we thought that too! Look at how much time the Dems have spent since the election talking values, and religion. We believed they had more supporters than they have too!

I'm sure there are lots of politicians, somewhere behind closed doors, talking about how shocked they are by the response of the American people to their recent efforts, and WHAT THE HELL DO WE DO NOW????

I must admit, I have my bag of Fritos, my glass of beer, and my confortable easy chair ready!

3. Delay is right about one thing.
"...Terri Schiavo...elevate(s) the visibility of what's going on in America," DeLay told his audience.

Yep, sure does.

4. If her plight is such a gift from God
Why are they so opposed to allowing her to be with God?

DeLay would be wise to keep his mouth shut right now, in light of his legal situation. Still, it's amusing to see him persist in opening it in order to insert his foot.

5. So, San Diego Union-Tribune, what are YOU going to do about it?
I'm just guessing here, but considering it's the San Diego paper, it's probably been a cheerleader for the corrupt Republican administration of the country for several years now, even embracing Commander Codpiece's flight deck strut back in 2003 when it knew or should have known what a fluffed-up bit of PR flummery that was.

Will the U-T begin treating Republican pronouncements with a slightly more skeptical eye, or will they continue to accept everything that comes out of the Republican blast faxes as holy writ? The Republicans have lied right to your faces and laughed up their sleeves at what chumps you are. Do you enjoy being played for suckers and fools? Or are you going to smarten up, and look beyond the shiny veneer?

6. Tom Delay -- Carrying His Cross Up The Mountain

Tom Delay -- Carrying His Cross Up The Mountain

Readers may recall a recent posting where Houtopia prophesied the "Passion of the Tom", in which U.S. House Majority Leader Tom Delay, with crown of thorns on his head and Cross on his back, martyrs himself for the Lord's work, otherwise known as partisan Republican politics.

Today, revelation! Our dear Mr. Delay does not disappoint. In a recent speech to the Family Research Council, Mr. Delay compared himself not only to the soon-to-rise Savior, but in a magnanimous gesture, added the unfortunate Terri Schiavo to form a trio of victims.

9. Yes, very much so
And this is why it may turn out to our benefits - if our leaders will know how to handle this. When so many Conservatives are upset at tramping on States Rights - a banner that they have been carrying. Apparently the young turks - DeLay and the rest of them - are not even familiar with the principles of the GOP.

They disdain the concerns about the deficit, they embrace big government with relish - as long as the spending favor their big fat donors and they blur the the old tradition of separation of church and state.

11. What has this to say about the folks that voted for Tom DeLay?
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 01:36 PM by 0007
That conduct was an affront to conservatism. What happened to the preference for a smaller and less intrusive government? What happened to the right of the individual simply to be left alone without the interference of government? And what about moral consistency? These are the same conservatives who usually espouse the virtues of federalism and leaving most matters to the state, and here they can't wait to involve the federal government. These are the same people who boast about the sanctity of the bonds of marriage when it comes to denying same-sex couples the right to enter into the union, but now they're arguing that a husband shouldn't have the right to make the decision as to whether a spouse in a vegetative state should be taken off a feeding tube.

12. Delay's unraveling.
Perhaps Brother Tom has foreseen his destiny. Will he be nailed to the Cross by the ACLU, Ronnie Earle, the Democrat Party, or an assortment of godless liberals? Or is there a Judas in the GOP caucus, waiting to give him a big sloppy kiss?

Judas is in the White House, AKA Karl Rove. Delay's night of long knives cometh.

Before he entered Congress, DeLay was an expert on how to kill pests. This week he tried to kill the judiciary with no success. It is not Terri Schiavo who needs protection; it is the American people and the Constitution from the likes of Tom DeLay.

Delay's hubris and actions are catching up to him.
