Kerry and Senators Chide EPA for Disregarding Mercury Study
25 March 2005

The Environment News section of MSNBC has a story today about Democrats speaking out about the EPA’s disregard for the recent Mercury Study.

The Environmental Protection Agency's decision to ignore researchers' analysis of possible health benefits from reducing mercury pollution from power plants was criticized Tuesday by Democrats in Congress.

"Why is the EPA suppressing the evidence that mercury pollution can be controlled better and faster?" asked Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

EPA officials said the study by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis wasn't submitted until Feb. 22, more than a month after the deadline the agency set for considering new data. The agency published its new regulations on mercury pollution from power plants on March 15.

In a press release on this subject on March 22nd, John Kerry said:

7. Mercury, schmercury
Republicans excuses for doing nothing about mercury:

1. Mercury is not really bad. Its toxicity is overblown.

2. Most of it comes from other countries and blows into the United States so our hands are tied.

3. The technology to remove mercury from power plant emissions is so expensive it would bankrupt the utilities.

4. It only affects fish in the oceans.

5. We're doing more than Clinton did.

6. This needs to be studied more.

7. Mercury has created a new consumer-friendly product -- a tuna that doubles as a thermometer.

OK, I made up that last one. But I've read all the others.

9. EPA To Drop 'E,' 'P' From Name

WASHINGTON, DC—Days after unveiling new power-plant pollution regulations that rely on an industry-favored market-trading approach to cutting mercury emissions, EPA Acting Administrator Stephen Johnson announced that the agency will remove the "E" and "P" from its name. "We're not really 'environmental' anymore, and we certainly aren't 'protecting' anything," Johnson said. "'The Agency' is a name that reflects our current agenda and encapsulates our new function as a government-funded body devoted to handling documents, scheduling meetings, and fielding phone calls." The change comes on the heels of the Department of Health and Human Services' January decision to shorten its name to the Department of Services.
