White people only.
I just got a big flyer thingie from my new US congresspuke. (I now officially have NO Democratic representation on ANY level of government. Seriously.)

The one thing I noticed was, there are all these cutesy, soft focus pictures of families and stuff and everyone is white. I mean, every single last one.

Now, I'm white, but I know for a fact that the district he represents is really diverse.

So what's up? Is this a big "yawn, who cares" issue for you? Or does it bother you? I know they are just pictures but the WHOLE point of this flyer is to say "HELLO! I REPRESENT YOU IN DC!!"

And if I weren't white, and all I saw were white smiling faces, on some level, I'd feel like he didn't REALLY represent me. (Of course, he doesn't even *represent* white Democratic me, but what the hell, let's pretend.)

Oh btw, his name is Kenny "Fuck You I Don't Give a Shit About You" Marchant.

1. I'd rather him do that than just put pictures on for the fuck of it.
At least there's a modicum of honesty involved there.

4. Diversity in Republican literature...
... is only allowed before elections. White-bread only, afterwards. Look for it to start changing again in 2006....

6. Whether he knows it or not, it sents a subtle message,
and certainly not an inclusive, welcoming one for those not fitting into a certain fictional demographic. If he'd care about who he might be snubbing through his implicit exclusion, it would have been caught in the proofing stage long ago.

How clumsy.

manufacturer Congressional repukes? Why do so many of them look alike? Inbreeding or what?

8. One of the more subtle forms of racism shows up as...
... unthinking assumptions that those who are not while nonetheless harbor a desire to be white.

Advertisers fall into this trap very often. And it's hard to discern whether the white-washing of the flyer was due to hidden racism in your rep or in the ad agency he hired.

9. Very true.
And I'm not quick to assign evil motives, either. Sometimes I think this stuff is SO deeply ingrained that it's just unthinking. If that's true, then some thinking and talking about it (awareness) can't be a bad thing.

18. Exactly. We are all living in a sea of racist legacies...
... though many of us have learned to stop contributing to societal racism.

And the dramatic remnants of racism (slavery, lynchings, certain words, etc.) are just the high-profile ones. The low-profile remnants often go unaddressed... perhaps because it was so painful for society to address the high-profile ones.

So we're left with this lingering odor of a racist past. This is not necessarily our fault for creating, but certainly our responsibility to improve.

It's like a marinade. We're soaking in it.

Fish don't realize they're swimming in water.

That kind of thing.

None of this is any excuse, obviously. But it's a description of the social environment where any changes we want will need to take place.

... the layout? The rep's office. If it didn't meet their standards, send it back and do it over again....

17. But of course.
And I'm not saying one party must be blameless while the other party is the racist pig.

It's subtle. No matter who assumption originated, it's not easily caught unless one is conditioned to look for it.

16. the Dems could jump out and circulate a flyer with a pic
of the flyer he sent you with a title:

Whats missing from these photo's?

Make sure it's subtle, but alot of people would catch on. Whether it was intentional or not, it should be pointed out that his flyer DOES show who he really represents.

20. You're lucky Bouncey.....
You could have Thelma "Lips firmly attached to Delay's Ass" Drake as your rep.....

She defeated our favorite son, David Ashe, with nasty (is there any other kind?) Rovian tactics, and David's an Iraq vet! But the repuke money rolled in so she could buy up all the local news ads and yes, SCARE people, your taxes will RISE and he SUPPORTS HANOI JOHN....well you catch my drift...but, sadly, it worked. And yes, I live in the same district as Pat Robertson and CBN. In fact, he's my neighbor.

I.Am.Really.Scared. That is, what our country is turning into. Especially that this was our last rep:

21. I could never understand how someone could be
gay AND a repug.

Is it some kind of self-hatred? Denial? Masochistic?

How could they stand on a platform clearly against themselves?

How could they bear to look themselves in the mirror with an ounce of dignity and respect for themselves?

I just can't understand...

I won't be contributing to the DNCC ever again.
