Jeb Bush is regretting the day he ever mentioned Terry Schiavo
The Catholic Brother who is the Schinder's spiritual adviser called him out earlier on live television: Jeb Bush, "You do have the power to save Terry's life." Of course Jeb can't risk a conflict with his own state troopers. The Right may turn on Jeb over this. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

4. he already tried yesterday
the state troopers told them they'd have to physically prevent the DHS folks from entering Terry's room. If he takes action, he risks an armed conflict. Think Roy Faubus.

34. No way he would do this...
he has a much greater sized audience to lose. Imo, that is why they turned back the "showdown" of state troops vs locals - suddenly - if there was resistance - he loses far more voters than those he cements to himself with the move.

Sad, but it doesn't look like GHW or Babs produced any viable offspring. At least any that will still be producing in 4 generations.

12. Let's hope.
There's a moral to this story. It's an age-old one. It's happened countless times, but there's still another fool willing to try it and get burned.

It's called: "Playing both sides of the fence". Jeb Bush loves to pander to his allies. He's perfectly willing to sell himself to the fundies, but he also has loyalty to businesses in Florida. Jeb can live with split loyalties, too.

As long as they're not all together in one room. That's when the claws come out.

This promises to be entertaining.

I can't help but think they picked Terri Schaivo to open the door for their version of judicial reform. Convienent this was in Florida - how many other states have families facing this same issue?
Jeb might have to take one for the team, but he's used to it by now.

PNAC member since 1997...

Florida Governor Jeb Bush Signs Executive Order 01-261 on 7 September 2001

Notice that 7 September 2001 is a Friday. September 11th was a Tuesday. So the only day this order could be rescinded would have been September 10th.

Jeb Bush signs what appears to be a fairly standard Executive Order regarding the Florida National Guard to:
... to order training to help respond to civil disturbances, natural disasters, and counter drug operations ...
It is Section 3 that is interesting....

Section 3.

The Florida National Guard may order selected members on to state active duty for service to the State of Florida pursuant to Section 250.06(4), Florida Statutes, to assist FDLE in performing port security training and inspections. Based on the potential massive damage to life and property that may result from an act of terrorism at a Florida port, the necessity to protect life and property from such acts of terrorism, and inhibiting the smuggling of illegal drugs into the State of Florida, the use of the Florida National Guard to support FDLE in accomplishing port security training and inspections is "extraordinary support to law enforcement" as used in Section 250.06(4), Florida Statutes.

Jeb Bush declares a state of emergency on September 11th with Executive Order 01-262. This order is declared faster than any other state, even New York or Washington, DC, and carries much greater powers.

Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 11:52 AM by rocknation

"Tom DeLay made me look bad by getting caught conspiring to use Terri Schiavo to save his own political neck, AND by not admitting that he'd disconnected his own vegetative father the year before Terri got sick! The state police made me look bad by telling the local police that I was planning to violate the spirit of the court order by rescuing Terri! And big brother Georgie made me look bad by interrupting his vacation in Texas to sign Terri's Law, leaving behind a baby to die because he didn't have any money! Now I could get impeached, my religious fanatic base is mad at me, and the Democrats are gloating instead of being shamed by the mainstream media that they didn't take a more public stand. I'M TELLING MY DADDY ON THEM! WAAAAAAHHHHH!"

26. A couple thoughts
1. Jeb doesn't have the power to 'save' Ms Schiavo. She's not going to recover. He only has the 'power' - and that term is questionable - to interfere with the natural course of things.

2. Wouldn't it be considered torturous - after being off the tube for 8 days now - to start up the feedings again ? Think of how diminished her status was to begin with when they pulled it, and after 8 days of degeneration ... how truly 'gone' must any semblance of life be ?

Could this be the over-reaching we've been hoping for? They've pissed off a lot of Americans on this issue, and they haven't satisfied the Right. I don't see how they come out of this looking good.

Of course they plan to use this as an attack on the judiciary. One insightful DU member speculated as much over a week ago. And now we see them starting to work that angle. Only they can't simply denounce Democratic appointed judges, cause Greer is a Republican, and a Baptist. As a colleague of his noted, he is this Christian Right. (And they kicked him out of his Church? Talk about cold.)
They are now attacking the judiciary itself, arguing that it's powers are excessive. Forget checks and balances. But if people aren't buying their Terri ploys, why will they swallow the anti-judiciary crusade?

Those who are for Terri to die will forget it by election time.
Those extremists who want to keep this brain damaged person alive

33. he loses two parts of the right
first the far right religious extremists to whom he was initially pandering - because he isn't willing to go "all the way" with this (reminiscent of those who blamed poppy for not going all the way to Bagdhad). But really - this is a rather small sliver of the right - not enough to cost Jeb! too much. However...

he also loses part of the moderate right - who have watched him appoint extremists into govt (remember the wacko he brought in to "clean up" the dept of familiy services? The guy who was run out for corruption?) - and now have seen how pandering he is... in frightening ways (there are a lot of moderate repub retirees in Florida who may not relish the image of their own life being the "next cause" of the religious extremists. Bigger and more important group to lose, imo.

36. It was Jeb's guys' idea to go public with this case
(snip)

Once again facing the prospect of Terri's death, Governor Bush tried to block the tube removal through executive and legislative powers. When that didn't work, his former adviser Ken Connor decided it was time to nationalize Terri's case—a longtime conservative fantasy. Already, religious leaders like Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention were on the airwaves, threatening political repercussions against lawmakers who failed to step up and fight for Terri. Connor reached out to U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon, a doctor and Florida Republican. In a House office, they gathered a strategy team including representatives from such pro-life groups as the Family Research Council and National Right to Life. They quickly settled on a strategy: to craft a broadly worded bill aimed at the due-process rights of disabled people like Terri, though her name wouldn't be mentioned. Meanwhile, Connor got a call from longtime friend U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, who had heard rumors about the legislative activity. "Kitty and I have been talking about it," he told Connor, "and I feel strongly" about helping out.

…Only days before the scheduled withdrawal of her feeding tube on March 18, House and Senate negotiators still hadn't reached a compromise on a bill. Connor blew up on a phone call with a senior GOP House member: "What's the point of having Republicans in control?" he asked. "The Republican base is going to hold the House leadership accountable."…

President George W. Bush had been monitoring these developments closely. On the eve of the tube's removal, he had traveled to Florida to tout his Social Security plan. Accompanying him on the plane ride were several Florida lawmakers, including Weldon and Martinez, who pressed Bush on the Schiavo case. Though Bush "told us that he supported our efforts," says Weldon, "he said that he didn't want to get directly involved." He also wanted to ensure that whatever bill Congress crafted wasn't unconstitutional and, according to Weldon, directed the Justice Department to advise on the legislation. Later that day in Orlando, Bush briefly discussed the Schiavo case with his brother Jeb (the White House refused to provide details). Then on Sunday, Bush flew to Washington from his Crawford, Texas, ranch, expressly to sign the Schiavo bill, which he did just after 1 a.m. Monday. …

37. I hope that you're right. I fear that you're not.
The right has shown an astounding ability to force their own collective head up their collective ass. Even if they're pissed at Jeb, they'd rather vote for him than "some damn LIEberal commie." Many of these people truly believe the BS that liberals want to destroy their religion, force them to have abortions, take away their guns, and require them to become homosexual.

If Rush/Hannity/O'Reilly tell them enough times that liberals murdered Terry Schiavo, they'll eventually believe it.
