Democrats are turning the tables on *
From Bloomberg News:

President George W. Bush began his battle for private Social Security accounts by targeting vulnerable Democrats. Now Democrats are turning the tables, using similar tactics to pressure Republican lawmakers.

House Democrats are holding town-hall meetings on Social Security in the districts of Republicans, including Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania and Jon Porter of Nevada, who face potentially tight races next year. At least three events next week will focus on opposition to Bush’s plan.

“I see a shift in the strategy,” said Jennifer Duffy, an analyst at the non-partisan, Washington-based Cook Political Report. “Democrats are playing the president’s game.”

The change reflects the declining support in public-opinion polls for Bush’s plan to let workers younger than 55 invest a portion of their Social Security taxes in stocks and bonds. In a Pew Research Center poll of 1,505 adults taken March 17-21, 44 percent said they supported private investment accounts, compared with 46 percent in February and 54 percent in December.

1. It's scary that 44% support the private investment accounts...
That's within range of a good propaganda campaign.

2. And the Republicans are squealing like swine!
How DARE the Democrats fight back? And use such underhanded, time-tested, Republican tactics in doing so? Next thing you know, they'll try to exploit Terri Schiavo's death to drive a wedge between the Republican party and the whacko right-to-lifers!

Only Republicans get to turn death into a political circus, don't the Democrats know that? Cheaters!

3. My Congressman in SC held a town hall meeting last night
I wasn't able to go but hope the right people went to hear him speak. Not just the tried and true Dems.

4. Imagine that! "Town Hall Meetings!"
Think of the reaction people will have when they're actually allowed in to the Town Hall, regardless of their political allegiance! What a concept! Maybe they'll be invigorated by having the opportunity to ask their own questions, NOT written (and pre-answered) by Karl Rove.

The question is, who will report on the Town Hall Meetings? The Corporate Media will cover every syllable of Bush's bullshit scripted sales pitches to his faithful, but how do we make them cover REAL news?

6. Limitations
Not that many people are going to go to Town Hall Meetings. The news media isn't going to report them, so the message won't go far.

It should be just one facet of a much bigger PR campaign.

5. Repub tv ads in heavy rotation
here in Ohio, we're being deluged with R tv ads that bash Dems for not coming up with an alterntive solution for SS solvency. The ad features quotes from Bush saying he invites all ideas and proposals, then asks the question "what ideas have the Dems come up with?" along with a stop watch ticking. None.

If R's are taking a beating on this issue, its not through any efforts by Dem leadership. Its the Dems complete lack of response on these issues that allows R's to bounce back so quickly from these failures.

Why do our leaders refuse to develop their own SS plan and promote it?

The Dem silence tactic hasn't worked in the past, why should we expect it to start working all of a sudden?

9. We're getting those in GA too.
And I always yell at the TV, "They're waiting for you dumbasses to bury yourselves with this issue!"

8. Could this be at **least** in part to the election of Dr. Dean
to be DNC chair?

There does seem to be a growing sense of strength and willingness to fight among some dems in particualr and the party in general. It is still a ripple, but hopefully it will soon be a huge, breaking curling, gorgeous, ridable, wave!

YeeeeeAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!
