Officials say Bush-chimp likening in ‘bad taste’

Brussels, April 1, 2005

Belgian trainers helping police to understand body language have caused a controversy by likening George Bush's facial expressions to a chimpanzee’s.

Interior minister Patrick Dewael said he was unaware of the pictures when he signed a letter promoting the training package for police dealing with unruly soccer fans, and said the idea was in “bad taste,” Het Laatste Nieuws daily reported.

The training presentation pictured the United States president’s face in various expressions beside photographs of a chimpanzee, the paper showed on its front page, in what was meant to be a humorous introduction to the subject of reading facial expressions.

The United States has so far not commented on the matter and Dewael's office was not immediately available for comment.

1. Yes, it disparages chimpanzees
who, after all, are our closest relatives in the primate world.

5. I was watching a show on Discovery
or some such channel, and they said our closest relatives are bonobos (sp?). They looked like big chimps, but whatever they are, I never remember learning about bonobos. When I grew up the non-human apes were chimps gorillas and orangutans. Anyone know what the bonobo story is?

10. A greasy, shifty, sniffing, smirking, used-car sales, warmongering addict
in the WH is good taste?

:nuke:

Nancy Reagan spending millions to dress herself and redecorate the WH, while Ronnie gutted social programs for poor/disabled/psych/welfare/children/environment-- now THAT was good taste!

is in pretty poor taste as well. I am tired of that particular joke.

14. they certainly appear similar
Chimps and humans are 98.6% genetically identical. The photos certainly cast no doubt on that statistic.
