Kerry Urges Romney to Sign Stem-Cell Bill
4 April 2005

John Kerry has been a staunch advocate for stem-cell research. It was an issue that he talked about frequently on the campaign trail. In today’s Boston Herald, Kerry urges Governor Mitt Romney to sign the MA stem-cell research bill.

Stem-Cell Research Is Pro-Life, By John Kerry

For everyone, the issue of stem-cell research is deeply personal and fundamentally moral. We each dread getting a call from a doctor with the results of a diagnosis that makes our heart sink, or the day we say goodbye to a loved one.

I'll never forget a woman I met last fall at a town hall meeting on stem-cell research. She stood up, her frail body shaking, and pleaded for her government to embrace stem-cell research. It was the moral clarity of her message that will stay with me forever.

“It's too late for me,” she said, “but we need to do this for those who still have hope.”

It's not too late for 13-year- old Garrett Burgess of Chelmsford, paralyzed at the age of 5, who traveled to all 50 states with his father to make the case for stem-cell research his doctors believe hold the promise that he can one day walk again.

In Massachusetts, we need to think of this moral challenge as Gov. Mitt Romney decides whether to sign or veto landmark legislation to allow research that holds out hope for millions. It's a question of our values as a state and a people, and these questions should never be answered lightly - but they must be answered.

1. they need to learn the economic lesson here too, this is
an economic plus for Mass, like it is here in Cali to. People know there is 3Billion to spend on this and they want a piece of it. It could create a brain drain from Mass high tech areas into the labs here in Cali. If Mass wants to get a peice of this lucrative pie they should pass their own bill like we did here. My son stands to benefit from this research so I hope more states will see the opportunity this affords them.

4. it's because Romney has plans to run for President
but he has to get through the Republican Primary first. he is going to use his veto (even though the legislature will overturn it)to try to get support from the right wingers in the primary.

13. YEAH, he is. Yes, I know Kerry is important because of his
intelligence, experience, perspective and overall approach to help us start digging ourselves out of this hole. But it helps me that he's also attractive. It took me a while to figure out that, too. It was funny when I did. One day--please don't laugh--I realized that among other things, young Kerry especially bears a striking resemblance to the one kid I was really in love with in high school. It was just an added bonus for me with regard to supporting JFK--smart, compassionate liberal who is also HOT.

Absolutely! And it helps he's attractive. I always thought he was. And so smart and compassionate and very sweet too.

I, too, have more than a mild appreciation for the Senator's "attributes."

And please, come join the John Kerry group.

18. As I just posted in the other group, thank you so much!
I had no idea that other area even existed (silly Iris). What a good discovery, considering that for some random reasons, today was a very bad day regarding feeling the pain about Kerry not being in the Oval Office at the moment. Concerning the election, I'm still hurting pretty bad overall, but today just sucked, worse than usual.

19. I thought so too...
I was feeling pretty aggro about the whole stolen election thing myself, and really went off on some freeptards, maybe a teensy bit more than I should have.
Then, I saw your most excellent post, and felt the need to do something nice for a kindred spirit and fellow Kerry lover.
Did you go to either the Central Point or Portland Kerry rallies?

21. Sadly, I had to miss all Oregon
appearances of Senators Kerry and Edwards and their respective spouses. That was really frustrating, especially because it was the result of some truly random scheduling impairments (including a car accident--thankfully, not serious, but serious enought to eff with my life for a while). Thanks again!

I'm glad the accident wasn't serious.
You're welcome, and maybe you'll catch Kerry in 2008!

11. Very important
The country was talking about alot of important issues last year. Health care, wages decreasing, college tuitions, alternative energy, stem cell research. We need to stop talking about their agenda and start talking about ours.

From the article, this is kind of scary too:

"Nationally, America has been losing its lead in science. Our share of industrial patents is down, our share of Nobel prizes is down, our published research is down and the number of doctorates in the sciences is down."

25. True to his word.
John kerry is still pushing for Stem-Cell Research. This was just one of the issues he passionately spoke about and promoted during the election.
