Reid, Pelosi at odds on how to "frame" the upcoming nuclear option fight
Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are arguing over the right way to frame (damn! George Lackoff is ruining a perfectly good verb!) the upcoming "nuclear option" fight, with Reid favoring a direct and narrow pitch and Pelosi wanting it to be part of a broader message about GOP abuse of power in Washington. House and Senate prerogatives aside, there's a legitimate difference of opinion on how to handle this fight. I'm sympathetic to Reid's apparent belief that it will take a focused and sustained message effort to get the public to understand, much less care about, a fight over Senate rules. But Pelosi's absolutely right that it should be part of a broader reform message about a runaway Congress and federal government under iron Republican control. Indeed, that's a message Democrats should hammer away on from now until November of 2006, no matter which particular abuse the GOPers are indulging in on any particular day.

1. I'm with Reid on this one
for the following reasons; 1) This primarily involves the Senate, 2) Right now the "nuclear option" fight is on the front burner and deserves the focus, and 3) If Dems concentrate on this issue and win, it strengthens/bolsters the overall Democratic cause. We can always broaden the discussion at a later point.

2. here we go again
Im sure they will figure out a message.

In the meantime, lets splash it all over the MSM that there is infighting regarding this issue, thereby giving the impression yet again that dems cant get their shit together.

Thanks for nothing!

3. I don't see why it has to be mutually exclusive
Have the Senators (whom are affected by the nuke option) talk about the narrow element and the Reps talk about how this is just another example of unchecked and unbalanced Republican power.

13. I'm not sure what your snarky comment is supposed to mean.
Obviously I never said nor did I imply that "people never disagree with one another" so your post is essentially meaningless as a response to mine.

I hope Reid and Pelosi can work out a unified message and strategy. If they can't, it is a sign that they could cooperate better. That's my point. If you wish to disagree with it, please do so without introducing a strawman.

4. Is New Donkey.com....New Democrat.com?
Why would a Progressive Dem site talk about bickering between Pelosi and Reid? I can see a DLC or New Dem site doing this, though.

6. Don't understand your question
Why would a Progressive Dem site talk about bickering between Pelosi and Reid?

Why wouldn't they? Unless the "Progressive" Dem site in question is not a Democratic site.

But besides, the blog was commenting on an article from "The Hill."

7. Lakoff (note spelling) has reframed the word "frame" for you, huh?
See the power of framing?

I agree with Pelosi, by the way.

14. Use both
Use Reid's approach while the fight is happening and if it finishes out in the short term then use it as ammo for a broader message of Republican abuse of power, if it drags out then use it plus Shiavo as examples of GOP abuse of power.

16. Let them use their 'option'
Then we can run against their abuse of power and restore the filibuster when we regain the Senate.

But it's hard to argue with Reid's effectiveness. I guess I'd trust his judgement on this.
