Boxer Amendment Overturns Global Gag Rule
Boxer Amendment Overturns Global Gag Rule
6 April 2005

The Senate took a step in the right direction today, on women’s rights. The Boxer Amendment (S. 278) slid through the Roll Call vote by a margin of 52 – 46. The bi-partisan co-sponsorship of the amendment from Senator Olympia Snowe of ME, should also be noted.

Late last year, Bush “extended a March 2001 order blocking the US Agency for International Development from providing grants to foreign groups supporting abortion.”

President Ronald Reagan originally imposed the ban in 1984. It was renewed by Reagan's successor, George Bush , the current president's father, but was rescinded in 1993 by then-president Bill Clinton .

The George W. Bush administration expanded the global gag rule to cover the entire State Department budget, more than eight billion dollars.

1. Thanks, kerrygoddess!
It's good to have some good news. As much as I can't truly feel overjoyed about the removal of an obstruction of choice because of how much ABSURD obstruction exists at the moment of a basic civil right no lawmaker should do anything but protect...this week has sucked worse than anything has sucked before for me so I guess I will choose to be a little happy about this.

2. Excellent!
I saw about 30 minutes of the floor debate. As usual, Senator Boxer was remarkable. I only wish she could be cloned for SD where we are stuck with Thune the yes person. I am glad this amendment passed!

3. Fuck those ***holes. Some women/girls in the world have absolutely
no choice in who and when they have sex. And they do not have access to close, speedy and preventive health care or reproductive rights. Until the balance of power changes.. you cannot be for a child to have a child if it will get her stoned to death. Unless you are the all knowing Bush!

5. She shamed them into it.
Good for her. Did you notice she basically used the tool they use all the time? She raised her voice a little and accused them of siding with rapists. Made them look bad--cold and uncaring.

Barbara Boxer is a great lady. Hope what she has is "catchy".

7. Very smooth
Senator Boxer is learning how they are and using their own ways against them. :) Great for her! I wish I could've watched that. I think she's a very passionate person and admire her a lot.

9. Barbara Boxer
Had the good fortune to see Barbara Boxer speak up close, as one speaker among many (Hillary included). She definately stood out, she is a passionate, dynamic woman. I was really impressed.
