Bolton nomination in deep trouble
GOP senator may oppose UN choice
By Farah Stockman, Globe Staff | April 6, 2005

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2005/04/06/gop_senator_may_oppose_un_choice

Hourahan said that 110 people contacted Chafee's Washington office on Monday alone, most of whom said they had received an e-mail from the office of Senator John F. Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, about the Bolton nomination.

Debbie Rich, a Chafee spokesman in Providence, said that fewer calls had come into the Providence office, but that ''most of the calls that are coming in are about Bolton, and the majority of the calls that are coming in are against his nomination."

Hourahan estimated that in Rhode Island 40 percent of voters are registered Democrats, 50 percent are independent, and 10 percent are Republicans. Over the years, Chafee has often gone against the grain of his party.

And all because of John Kerry's email...

1. Gotta love this quote :
"In recent days, Chafee's Washington office has received about 500 calls and e-mails about Bolton's nomination, and fewer than 10 of them supported Bolton, said Stephen Hourahan, the senator's press secretary."

7. I am originally from New England
Vermont, to be precise, and IMHO NE Republicans tend to be more independent.
They resent bullying tactics and don't forget who they're working for,
their constituents.

2. They're running a PATHETIC ad on TV
...urging people to call their legislators and support this clown. Big problem, though--they show his photo in the ad, and of course, they use one of those voice over people with a "sky is falling" voice. Well, people are starting to figure out that the Chicken Littles in this government are a bunch of assholes, and the sky won't fall just because they whine. They can't keep people in a constant ORANGE ALERT state--fatigue sets in, then numbness, and people start getting pissed off and demanding their piece of the good ole days.

And the picture in this shitty ad of Mr. I-HATE-THE-UN, Captain Kangaroo Meets Helmetless Darth Vader Bolton, does NOT inspire confidence. Whoever is machining this public relations campaign seems to have lost the old GOP "evil genius" edge--their schtick just isn't selling like it used to...!

9. Chafee spokesman today - "we're inclined to support the nomination"
Hearing for Bush's U.N. Nominee Postponed

-snip-
The postponement — probably until Monday — comes amid increased focus on the potential pivotal vote that will be cast by Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record), R-R.I. Chafee is a moderate who has said he likely would support the nomination, but he has given Bolton only a lukewarm endorsement.

"The senator has not made up his mind. He's waiting to hear on the record what is said and then he'll decide. But we're inclined to support the nomination. That's where we are," Stephen Hourahan, a Chafee spokesman, said Wednesday.

So far, Hourahan said, there's been nothing in Bolton's background that has surfaced that would prompt Chafee to vote against Bolton.

Republicans control the Foreign Relations panel by 10-8. Bills and nominations generally need a majority vote for a committee to send the item to the full Senate.

16. You can call toll free using this number 1-866-808-0065
Ask for Chaffee's office. The use of the toll-free number is good only Wednesday and Thursday.
