With an ever growing mountain of ethics charges likely to force Tom DeLay to resign, we must remember to take the opportunity to sweep Dennis Hastert out the door with him. After all, "Speaker" Hastert is in charge of the House of Representatives about as much as Charlie McCarthy was in charge of Edgar Bergen. It's Tom DeLay who is really running the House. The Republicans wanted to keep their most hateful face away from the top "leadership" post, because they knew how much Newt Gingrich hurt their party. Their new subterfuge is to let Dennis Hastert pretend to be the Speaker, while DeLay really runs things. There are things that only Hastert can do, like stonewall the ethics investigations into DeLay's activities. It just wouldn't look good to have DeLay stonewalling the investigations into his own ethics. Every vote, every procedural move, every introduction of a bill or amendment on the House floor is controlled by Hastert and his gavel. It is Hastert who is fighting to keep the investigators away from DeLay. I'll bet a lot of Republicans would like to see the sleaze ball resign, but DeLay is apparently prepared to fight to the death, and Hastert is committed to helping him. The whole thing is starting to remind me of Adolph and Eva in their bunker. Sixty years ago this week... When the inevitable catches up to DeLay, and he is forced to announce his resignation as "Speaker", from a jail cell, we must insure that Dennis Hastert goes down with him. Start now, and be sure to link Hastert's name with DeLay's at any opportunity! Nothing could help our chances in the 2006 election more than to have Republican House leaders resigning in the face of massive ethics charges. One more thing: All the Republicans in the House voted for DeLay to be one of their leaders. They all bear some responsibility for his actions, and also for the stonewalling.
