Did anyone else see the frenzied fundies on CSPAN today?
Did anyone else see CSPAN's coverage of the fundies who want to revolutionize the "out-of-control-activist Judiciary"?

A panel of frenzied Fundies took questions from a small audience.

One man said, "It's time that our religious leaders stopped being politicians. The time has come for our politicians to stand up and be religious leaders!" He was frothing at the mouth when he made this remark, which drew whoops and hollers from the wild-eyed crowd.

I couldn't what I was hearing from these horrific people.

They boasted of plans to impeach the Schiavo judges.

Furthermore, they want the president to have sole authority to impeach "activist judges", thus wiping out the Constitutionally mandated 2/3 vote in the Senate. The Fundies claimed the 2/3 Senate approval of judge impeachment would only "politicize the process."

These people are scary. Damn scary. I've never witnessed so much wild-eyed, misguided vitriol. These freaks are white-hot angry and convinced that their religious agenda must be adopted by every politician.

They don't care about the Constitution. They don't care about America. They have no respect for our Founding Fathers.

Our country will be decimated if these people have their way.

2. They're freaking!
No bugle calls, no naked people floating up into the sky. Life goes on, we all get a little older, the sun appears another day. Very freaky stuff if you've devoted your life to a suicide cult. Time is not on their side.

"Question with boldness even the existence of God; because if there be one, He must approve the homage of Reason rather than that of blindfolded Fear."

This is so horrible. After all our centuries of our history it leads to this bullshit.

4. I wish "our" zealots had the decency to show their devotion
by beating themselves with chains or hanging themselves by hooks like their Catholic counterparts in the Philippines. I can respect that. Unfortunately "our" lunatics express their delusional fervor by beating gays to death, killing doctors and judges, and trying to destroy democracy in the US.

8. That is a shi'ia thing
You see it in Iran and Syria as well amongst the shi'ia communities. It doesn't happen all the time, only during the Holy days.

If you go to the PI (Philllipine Islands), you will see guys who get nailed to the Cross in imitation of Christ--other countries as well, but I've personally witnessed that over there. Quite discombobulating, to be frank. A bit horrific.

Try as I might, I just can't worry about passing judgment on religious fervor, or examples of physical penance. I don't own it, I can't see the point in it, so who am I to say. I don't especially like it in my face, to be honest, and I don't like being told how I should be behaving or believing. Tiresome, it is, when it is forced on one.

My opinion is that genuine works, not symbolic acts, are more important in the great scheme of things, regardless of one's belief system or lack of same. Beat yourself? Nail yourself to a cross? Why not help the homeless, the hungry, the poor? Makes way more sense to me....

Mileage may vary--it always seems to!

5. It was horrific
Truly horrifying. Between the anti-abortion videos, the prayer sessions, and comments about how only people who believe in God have the inner ability to make moral decisions, I'm honestly scared for the future of this country.

6. That was on while Malloy was on...
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 01:01 AM by Jeebo
...and I was trying to listen to Malloy while my brother was listening to the "Stop Activist Judges" loonies on C-SPAN. Some of that nonsense seeped through my headphones, and then I actually willingly listened to it during the Malloy show's commercial breaks ... but not much, because when I started trying to tell him what I thought about it, we ended up getting into a shouting match. And then Malloy would come back on, and I would say, "We'll have to continue this discussion during the next commercial break. Malloy's back on now." I kept pointing out to my brother that no opposing points of view were being allowed there, that those people were hypocrites who never think any judges are "activists" when the alleged "activism" happens to coincide with THEIR ideology, and that what they want is not an end to "judicial activism" but a judiciary that will rubber-stamp EVERYTHING they legislate so that they NEVER will have to deal with ANY opposition. I tried to point out to my brother that the courts are there as part of the system of checks and balances, that without the courts there will be NOBODY to protect the rights of minorities from a form of tyranny exercised by majority vote, that if the legislative and executive branches try to exceed their legal constitutional authority, who's going to stop them if not the courts? My brother complained about "the nine people in robes" who have set themselves up as gods over us all. I pointed out that the Republicans in congress and the White House who already have control of ALMOST everything are the ones who are trying to grab what little power left in the government that they don't already have so that THEY will be the ones who have god-like powers. I asked him why he resents the power the judges have but not the power the House and Senate and White House have? He answered that they are answerable to the voters, and the judges are not. My brother went to bed then before the next Malloy commercial break came on; I was going to tell him next that the congressman and senators and president are not answerable to the voters either, but to the corporate kleptocrats and robber barons who finance their campaigns. I know he actually agrees with me that ALL elections should be publicly financed.

My brother used to be a sane, sensible, left-leaning man. What has happened to him? He does listen to a lot of Hannity and Limbaugh. In some ways he's still liberal, some ways conservative, some ways centrist. But to whatever extent Hannity and Limbaugh et. al. have brainwashed him, I CURSE them.

As Malloy would say, "Have I said yet tonight how much I HATE these people?"

Ron

18. Sorry about your brother . . .
Have you considered de-programming? Kidding!

So he's all upset because "the nine people in robes" made a decision that he doesn't like? I'd just ask where he was when Bush v. Gore was decided and an election was awarded to the loser.

In any case, the frothers on CSPAN are ludicrous. They either don't realize (or hope that people watching don't realize) that the judges they're so hot to impeach in the Schiavo matter were STATE COURT judges, and Congress can't impeach them. State court judges serve at the pleasure of the people of the state they're in, not at the pleasure of Congress or the President. It's federal judges who are subject to impeachment for misconduct, and removal only after a trial.

And what are the charges for impeachment? What misconduct did the judges exhibit? Did they rule against the law? Did they rule against the facts? Pushing these emotional out-of-control demagogues to argue on the facts with specificity is a sure way to shut them up, because they're entire case is built on emotions and visceral reactions to something they don't like.

9. I did see that this afternoon and these are scary people
A couple of things that were said really bothered me.

1. One of the speakers, Herb Titus, in plain language said, "what is needed is a revolution."

2. Another speaker, Howard Phillips, said, among other things, "that the passage of the Constitutional Restoration Act, could provoke a constitutional crises, but that was what was needed now was a constitutional crises", tying back into the revolution theme of the previous speaker. I have to wonder if there are not some sedition issues with their rhetoric.

On the up side though, these people are quite upset with Jeb, and George, and the Congress for not charging in with the police or military, and saving Terri Schiavo. They are convinced that they had the legal authority to do so, but refused to act. Now normal people understand that they had no such authority and this, I think, could hurt the theocrats, i.e. Republicans.

Hopefully real republicans are watching this and looking and will not vote in 2006 or will vote democratic. If you think about it all these people are just a small portion of the republican party but they are slowly taking over I think.

I caught a few minutes of someone talking about "Terry Schindler" and her "court-appointed philandering murderer" and I just couldn't take it. I probably should have kept it on so that I'd be more informed but I just couldn't do it.

11. It was on all day. Frightening.
The guest list was impressive. Tom DeLay even had a filmed spot.

These people are nuts, but they wield power in BushWorld. They are flexing their muscles to push this country farther and farther into theocratic fascism.

These people are mean, nasty, jack-booted thugs for Jesus. Most importantly, they are NEVER satisfied. It's hard work purifying the world.

Oh, and don't forget that Blue votes don't count any more so these people really are players in the Red State Morallity Play that our country has become.
