Despite the whitewash "investigations". Despite
"Our executive order did not direct us to deal with the use of intelligence by policy makers...". Maybe people are waking up.
I pose this hopeful supposition because of today's chart on
http://pollingreport.com/:I realize it may be bumping up near the max, but the % of people who believe we were intentionally misled about Iraqi WMDs is for the first time greater than the % of people who think we weren't. And it's very likely that a number of those people still in the "were not lied to" category really believe we were, but just can't bring themselves to admit such a horrible possibility (you can bet they'll be less likely to trust Bush in the future, though).
This to me has always been the most important issue, and the worst thing the Bush administration has done (lied the country into a war). Because if we don't wake up to it, they'll do it again (and again, and again...).
Perhaps people aren't so stupid after all, and actually remember that there were significant voices challenging administration claims BEFORE the war, from both within and without our government. Perhaps they remember that despite all the blaming of intelligence, the UN clearly stated that the Niger-uranium documents were forgeries BEFORE the war started. Perhaps they remember that the aluminum tubes that Bush, Rice et al so confidently stated were "only" suited for WMD purposes, were dismissed as being for conventional artillery by numerous experts BEFORE the war. Perhaps they realize that we now know just WHO was right. Perhaps they realize that the buck does not stop at the CIA Director's desk (who got a Medal of Freedom, BTW), but at the President's.
Perhaps?
