Are the consevatives testing their power with Delay?
My observation is that Tom Delay and his cronies are so confident in their control of the news and how it is framed that they think they can get away with anything. Delay's lack of ethics will be their ultimate test. They know that they can count on Fox News and all of the right wing radio talk shows to repeat whatever bullshit line they push. Watch how this plays out in the coming weeks. Now that the Schaivo and Saint John Paul II distractions are over we will see how the con's play their cards. It appears that they will use the "everybody does it" defense.

As always look to Rush for clues. He is tied to the inner circle. Rush tried the Rathergate option last week and it failed miserably when Mel Martinez had to admit he was the source of the talking points memo. Of course, more than half of the right wingers still believe that the Dem's were the source. That is just how pathetically stupid they are you know.

The next two weeks are crucial. If Delay can save his rotten hide then they will know they can pull off anything. The nuclear option? Sure, no problem. War with Iran? - you betcha. Extending and strengthening the Patriot Act? - Why certainly.

1. If DeLay gets away with this
then our democracy is gone. DeLay has been exposed for all the world to see and if we accept his actions, then nothing will stop him in the future. DeLay will be even more powerful than Bush.

2. I don't think there's a time limit on it.
That DA down in Texas is still holding the Damocles indictment
sword over DeLay's head, and I don't think we've seen the end of
the dribs and drabs of stories about DeLay's behind the scenes
behavior.

DeLay's in there for as long as the White House is willing
to tolerate him. Cheney and Frist repudiating DeLay's
comments about retribution on the judges who wouldn't
reconisder the Schaivo case is indication enough that there's
some distancing going on there.

The question I think is will the stench from DeLay finally
get to be too much for the White House, and if/when they try
to toss him, will he strike back at them with both barrels
blazing.

4. The problem is that Delay is a power unto himself
The unbelievable hubris alone of the man will take him down. Any and all conservatives with future aspirations will distance themselves from this train wreck of a human being.

Oh, sure, there will be a short-lived rally behind him, but ultimately, it will dawn on them that associating with Delay is political suicide. Even Shrub seemed to pull back from taking the ultimate action of interfering with the judicial decision.

What will be fascinating to watch is the reaction from religious nutcases. These people have a FIRM grip on the levers of Republican party power and they're not willing to let go anytime soon.

Delay and the fundies are still a potent force and there won't be an easy dénouement to this.

Still, I'm going to the store and picking up a CASE of popcorn for this one.

5. I agree with you
DeLay and the fundies are going to fight and they fight down and dirty. They will attack those who point out DeLay's flaws and try to bring down their accusers. That's why this contest is so important. No one will dare question guilty Repubs in the future if DeLay gets away with all that he has done.
