Why is Lieberman such a pariah here?

His support for the war is exactly the position of Hillary. His domestic policy is basically to bring back the Clinton policies. Was Clinton not democrat enough?

It is close the Kerry and Edwards, who, despite campaign ads from Dean, close to Dean, albeit in that order in willingness to not go to war.

Joe is a solid Dem- but feels - and feels this without much support from other Dems - that Saddam was indeed a immanent danger requiring immediate war.

Though many DUer's adore Hillary, I'm not one of them.

Lieberman can perhaps be best defined by a cartoon I saw recently, depicting him walking behind President Bush, dutifully lifting his trailing robe and asking, "Would you mind if I ran against you? And could I borrow your platform?" (I'm paraphrasing.)

I have reservations about his support for Faith Based Charities. On top of that, Lieberman co-sponsored a more hawkish Iraq War Resolution. Lieberman could have supported the Biden-Lugar amendment, a bill most Democrats (and even some Republicans) would have wanted to support but he didn't.

Lieberman also wants to do away with the Capital Gains Taxes and he is extremely pro-business.

During the Vice Presidential Debates in 2000, he barely engaged Dick Cheney and was not a voiciferant activist during the Florida recount.

This year, we need a fighter, and I do not think Lieberman can both bring the goods and carry the base.

It also might be that Lieberman was the first person to jump up in the Senate calling for Clinton's impeachment by the House and trial in the Senate.

It might be that he's actively interfered with regulation of his favorite corporate sponsors, the accounting and insurance industries, which eventually helped precipitate the Enron/Global Crossing/Tyco scandals and their ilk.

Might be that he's closer, ideologically, to Bush than to the Democratic Party.

Might be that he failed to support Gore, in any meaningful way, in the 2000 Florida recount debacle.

Might be that, of all the Democratic candidates, Lieberman least represents the overall platform of the Democratic Party.

Might be that Lieberman least represents the populist movement espoused by many DU'ers.

But he has no chance of winning the presidencey. For weeks, all he has been doing is providing future soundbytes for the GOP on Dean and Clark.

They mislabel him when they call him a Centrist, IMHO. Probably the biggest indication that he's NOT like Clinton was when he sided with the Republicans to override Clinton's veto on the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1996. The bill gave CEOs freedom from litigation from their stockholders.

Also, Lieberman was already in a leadership position and had the opportunity to push forth investigations against Republicans, and which would have greatly shored up the Democratic position, but he waivered. Truthfully, his track record indicates that he will not go for the jugular against Republicans. However, he doesn't seem to have the same reservations about going against his own Democratic fellowship.
